Punjabi Masculine: he-goat or male goat Feminine: she-goat or female goat Are both of these names used? On Eid, Muslims have been ordered to slaughter either a he-goat/male goat, or a she-goat/female goat. B

Tamil Male and female goats are sometimes called billy goats and does, respectively, but "male goat" and "female goat" work too.

If you just say "a goat", wouldn't that be enough? It would be either a male or a female in any case. Roymalika

You mean they both are collectively called billy goats? And are they also called "he-goat" and "she-goat"? entangledbank

London English - South-East England Male and female can be used about any animals. He and she are specific to goats (and the odd other animal), and speaking of a he-goat is more like saying a ram or a tomcat (where he have special names for the sexes). Either could be used. A male goat is also a billy-goat, and the term that often corresponds to that for the female is nanny-goat. These sound more playful than neutral; they're more for folktales. T

Southern England English - England I've always known them to be called 'Billy-goats' and 'Nanny-goats'. B

Please read the full sentence.

The word "does" in my post is not the present tense form of "do" but the plural of "doe". If you're unfamiliar with the word "respectively", please look it up in the dictionary, and if it's still unclear, you're welcome to ask about it of course. Roymalika

OK, thanks. I considered "does" in your post as the present tense of "do". That caused the confusion. Edit: I have just checked the dictionary. It's told me that the name is "doe". But I wonder whether I can call it a "doe goat"? Last edited: Jan 13, 2020 B

Tamil Just "doe". Or "nanny goat", as #5 says.

If you think about it, it's unlikely that male and female goats are collectively called billy goats, as you thought, because we already have the common word "goat" which covers both males and females. B

You can call it what you like.:) But if you're asking if it'd be correct, the answer is "No". Roymalika

Is there any one-word name for the male goat too as is for the female goat ("doe")? B

Tamil You are expected to try to find answers by yourself before you come to this forum for help. Have you tried Google? There is one, but it isn't as common as "billy-goat" as far as I know, and it's more general; the listener would have to know you were referring to a goat, unlike "billy goat", whose meaning is clear even without context. heypresto

South East England English - England This is going off topic. As Barque said in post #2, in your sentence all you need is 'goat'. You don't need to mention billy-goats or nanny-goats at all. Roymalika

As a general rule, goats are not commonly discussed in the English-speaking world at all. To get back to your sentence, why not just say "a goat", and avoid all unnecessary confusion? You must log in or register to reply here. Share: Bluesky LinkedIn WhatsApp Email Share Link
