One of the Strongest Creatures on the Planet!

Ants are fascinating creatures. They have been on the planet for about 100 million years! In that time, they have been used in various experiments and have been able to do some amazing things. For example, Australian bull ants have been able to carry things that weigh 20 times more than their own body weight!

They use their strength and numbers to lift and carry heavy objects. If a second grade student was as strong as an ant, he or she would be able to pick up a car!

Ants have a respiratory system which is quite different from ours.

Instead of having lungs, oxygen is absorbed through small holes located all over the body. The holes, called spiracles, allow oxygen to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream from the air outside the body.

Since blood is usually carrying nutrients to all parts of the ants, the oxygen is carried to each of the different cells rather than staying in lungs to be breathed in again.

Another way ants extract oxygen is through its abdomen. The spiracles in their abdomen allow them to extract oxygen from the air they take in through their mouths. It’s a very efficient system in a very small package.
