The Information Architects of Encyclopaedia Britannica American immunologist and physician Anthony Fauci has served as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) since 1984, while also continuing to serve as chief of the Laboratory of Immunoregulation at NIAID, a role he assumed in 1980. Fauci first joined NIAID in 1968 as a clinical associate in the Laboratory of Clinical Investigation. He has been widely lauded within the scientific community for his important contributions to the current understanding of how the human immune system responds to immunosuppressive agents and for his critical role in the development of treatments for diseases such as polyarteritis nodosa. Fauci is also renowned for his seminal research on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). As director of NIAID, Fauci has worked with the U.S. government in an advisory capacity in response to public health emergencies throughout the world.
