February 05, 2006, 02:44:33 AM Hey guys, I have been reading up on all the great threads on baitcasting reels but I have not seen much on the bass pro-shop reels. I have been saving up for a while to buy a new reel for this fishing season. I am a very low income house being disabled and all and can only afford to get one reel. I am going to spend around $120.00 and I have seen most all here are really happy with the curado. What I was wondering thought is this....does anyone know anything about reels such as the BPS Rick Clunn baitcaster? This reel looks great with all the stuff on it and 8 bearing system. I hear it is on sell at BPS for $70.00 If you guys seem to think it is a good reel I might pick this one up. I had thought about getting a Pflueger but after I seen a lot of the guys here having trouble with those I ruled it out. Still thinking about a Quantum PT reel, I have always fished with the cheap Wal-Mart Quantum's but decided this year I would buy a higher priced baitcaster and see just what I had been missing out on. Sadly This most likely will be the only time I get to spend this much on one so I wanted to get a nice one and the Bass Pro-Shop reels looked like they might be it, but just wanted any info you guys might have before I wasted the money on one. Thanks a ton guys and good fishing. Mike Noble

February 05, 2006, 04:20:14 AM I don't know about the "Rick Clunn" reel, but all my reels are the XPS reels from Bass Pro. I have been using them for about 7 years and have been extremely pleased. Hopefully someone will have experience with the specific reel you are looking for. February 05, 2006, 07:58:55 AM Like Mike, I've got two BPS extreme baitcasters. I am very happy with them. I'm sure there are better reels, but not at the price of these. Don't know about the Rick Clunn models, sorry. The early bird may get the worm, but it is the second mouse that gets the cheese.

February 05, 2006, 08:57:39 AM I have owned an extreme model baitcaster from BPS, as well as a Rick Clunn model. I have not owned one of the brand new models from this year, mine was the older Rick Clunn from about 3 years ago, but it is basically the same reel just different cosmetics. My experience with this reel is as it is with all BPS reels, they are the best casting reels on the market for about 6 mo to a year, and then they start to squeak, make noises, and pretty much fall apart. This is just my experiences, if you dont fish a whole lot during the year, they will probably last in perfect condition for a few years, but I fish almost everyday, in a pond or anywhere even if i dont take the boat out, so I seem to really put equipment to the test. In my opinion, shimano is the way to go, the citica or the curado are a little more expensive, but in the long run you will be much more satisfied. February 05, 2006, 03:57:02 PM Ranger I too own some XPS from BPS and enjoy them. I also have a Rick Clunn Baitcaster and it serves it's purpose...I personally like either a Okuma Nemesis or a Daiwa Team Advantage...Now the TD Advantage was on sale from BPS for $59.88, I think they went back up to $99.99 though and if you absolutely don't need one right now look around.....................A small piece of knowledge I learned though----Don't buy anything without trying it out first--Got to the store in your area that is selling the type/style reel you want and have them place it on the type/style rod you plan on using it on and walk around with it trying it out to see if you like the way it feels, handles, etc before spending your hard earned cash

February 05, 2006, 05:43:56 PM this is a very interesting thread...I'm desparately in need of another baitcaster, but have been a hardcore Shimano nut for 20 or so years...but then my income is hurting right now.Now I try to fish almost every day in the Summer, and very often in the Spring and Fall with some Winter fishing thrown in...works out to approximately 120 times-a-year on the water...do any of you who like the less expensive BPS reels fish this much? How abusive are you to your reels? Inquiring minds want to know. topcat

February 05, 2006, 07:02:56 PM I can't say that I have heard/seen many complaints about the RC reels at BPS but they don't really seem to be as popular as the others they sell.I have personally owned Pro Qualifier low profile and the Extremes. I could never recommend the PQ to anyone but the Extremes are a descent reel that I would compare to the old Shimano Curado but not quite as smooth. The two cheapest reels I can recommend to anyone at this point would be the BPS Extreme or Pinnacle Titanium Carrera. My thought would be to go with the Carrera at $80 as it is a basically the same reel as the Extreme but possibly a little lighter and smoother operating. If at all possible, I would say step up to either the Shimano Cruxis at $99.99 or CiticaD at $120 if you have any thoughts towards hard fishing such as tournaments. There is my .02+.
Best of luck with your choice.

February 06, 2006, 07:43:36 PM I just bought a BPS baitcaster combo today at the BPS in Harrisburg, PA. I love the BPS Extreme 60 million modules rod (I think its the Woo Davies series rod) I have it on another rig with a Cabelas Prodigy baitcaster reel. The reel I bought today to combo up with the BPS rod is the Shimano Citica 2000D. It's a fine piece. Can't wait to try it out. The rod selection I went with was a MH 6', 3/8 - 3/4 oz, 10 - 20# test, 80/20 rod ... personal preference. My other BPS Xtreme rod is a 7.5' MH, 3/8 - 1.5 oz, very sensitive, lots of backbone (enough backbone to stick a 3/O hook through a big Northern Pikes skull) and it's my absolute favorite rod.The combo price with the Shimano reel & BPS rod was $140.00 The reel alone retails for $120 & the rod alone retails at about $100 (I'm not sure on that, the last one I bought did). The combo price is a heck of a deal. I looked at the BPS Extreme reels and to be honest, I thought they where, 'eh, kinda "Micky Mouse 'ish". They felt cheap. I looked at the Rick Clun models and I never asked them to get the reel out to examine 'cause I didn't like the rod. BPS also has a Quantum combo set up endorsed by Bill Dance. I like & respect Bill Dance, and it's a half decent set up, but it's definately Wal-Mart quality. Nothing bad against Wal-Mart stuff ... I donate a lot of money to them, but when I'm looking for a new rod & reel I want quality that I feel is going to last a long time. www.stephensoutdoors.comwww.crookedcreektackle.com Rangerboats05

February 06, 2006, 11:14:53 PM Well, guys I went to BPS today and bought my first "Nice" fishing reel. I spent way more that I was suppost to spend but I am very happy with my purchase. I bought the Quantum Energy PT reel. Once I had seen it, I feel in love with it and went ahead and got it. It took the money I was going to spend on a rod also to get it, so I came home and put it on a older rod I had for now. I stood in the yard most of the day just throwing it, most of my neighbors most likely think I went crazy.
I am going to buy a All-Star rod next month for it. Thanks for the replies and i know I posted about BPS reels, which is what I figured I would be buying but, well, I got the shinny one
I will let you guys know more about how it holds up and how I like it in the future it is my first really good reel. All my others were the $30.00 Wal-Mart specials. LoonyToon

Rangerboats05, You the Man, I looked at that reel for a lllooonnnggg time the other day whan I got the 7ft6in heavy XPS Woo Davis extreme flippin stick...It sure was pretty and I have a few Quantum Accurist 500 reels, and that reel was sweet on that rod....I didn't and you did that's great and you'll get alot of years out of that piece...............Isn't that ironic cause I said I felt sorry for you going in there for just 1 reel, but I did not know it was that 1111111111111

February 15, 2006, 11:46:28 PM Maybe you can get lucky like I did...................I bought a NEW Castaic SF (Shimano) reel: 6.2.1. It came on a 7' Sojourn (Shimano) rod. I also got a brand new spool of Yo-Zuri Hybrid Fluor. 12 lbs. It also came with 2 baits that were still in their original box.(Heddon torpedo and a pkg of Senkos) Here is the kicker....... It only cost me $45.00. That's right, $45.00. I got it at a garage sale in town and the man said he got all of the items for Christmas. He said he couldn't fish anymore due to a medical condition. I offered him more money but he wouldn't take it. So I went home and cooked a big batch of fish and served him and his wife lunch. This type of stuff is what makes life so grand. Stepping up to the plate and being able to help your neighbors. They sure enjoyed the fish. I told them not to hesitate asking for fish. I would be more than glad to share. After all.....$45.00!!!!!! topcat

February 16, 2006, 10:39:16 PM Maybe Connie will be on soon and give some insight to this but for now this is what Shimano says about a problem with the new D series reels, Trey (my son) has the new Citica and is experiencing exactly what they are talking about. Luckily Shimano stands behind their products so it will be fixed.SHIMANO OFFERS NEW LEVELWIND SYSTEM FOR CURADO D, CITICA D AND CRUXIS BAITCASTING REEL IRVINE, Calif. 2/06 -- Shimano has introduced a Levelwind System Kit for all models of the Curado D, Citica D and Cruxis baitcasting reel series. With the Curado D series, the kit is not needed on the 100 size reels. This Kit consists of a new Line Guide and a new support system for the Upper Stabilizer bar. "The reason for this change," said Jeremy Sweet, reel product manager at Shimano, "is that, under certain fishing conditions, the current Line Guide tolerance is too tight with the Stabilizer Bar which can cause the reel to bind up and makes an audible clicking noise. No permanent damage is caused to the reel with this binding. This occurs due to a tight tolerance between the Line Guide and Stabilizer Bar. If any contaminants, such as salt, sand, dirt or vegetation, accumulate on the Stabilizer Bar, the Line Guide will create too much friction on the Stabilizer Bar and bind."Sweet notes that this only occurs when fishing with an extremely slow retrieve rate, and will typically occur within the first 1- to 2-days of use. The problem is limited to extremely slow dragging of plastic baits across the bottom by turning the handle at a rate of one turn every 4- to 5- seconds."If you have not experienced the problem during the first few days of fishing then the corrective action from this new levelwind system is most likely not needed," said Sweet. "Also, if your fishing consists of normal plastics techniques, crankbaits, jerkbaits and other similar lures, then the problem will most likely never occur. Lastly, if the waters in your region are clear, with no mud or salt, the issue will mostly likely never arise."It's also important to note that the current Levelwind System will 'break in,' meaning that the tight tolerance that causes the problem in the specific situations noted will actually wear down to a point that the problem will stop occurring. However, Shimano strives for perfection and the Levelwind System Kit will result in that goal.Whether you have experienced the issue or not, Shimano is offering to install this kit at no charge on any Curado D (except 100 sizes), Citica D, or Cruxis reel that is sent in to Shimano American Corporation, any of the Satellite Service Centers or any of Shimano's Warranty Centers. Approximate turnaround times for the corrective action is two weeks after receiving the reel. For instructions on how to ship the reel in, the latest turnaround time, and the shipping address of the closest Shimano Center authorized to perform the corrective action, please contact our Customer Service Representatives at 1-877-577-0600 or visit our website at www.fish.shimano.com.
