Apex of the heart - Definition

It refers to the lowest section of the heart that is superficially visible. In Latin, it is known as "Apex cordis."

Apex of the heart - Location

It lies posterior to the fifth left intercostal space, about 8 to 9 cm from the mid-sternal line. It is in a slightly medial direction to the midclavicular line.

Apex of the heart - Appearance

It is formed by the inferolateral portion of the left ventricle. It is directed anterior, inferior, and to the left. It is overlapped by the pleura and the left lung.

Apex of the heart - Function

This cardiovascular structure is is responsible for regulating the contraction of the ventricles. Due to its presence, the ventricles can contract from the bottom upwards. This provides the thrust that is necessary to send the blood upwards and out of the heart. This efficacy mainly owes to the manner in which the apex is formed within the left ventricle.
