  • Apply for a Georgia Learner’s Permit (Class CP)

An instructional permit, also known as a learner’s permit, is for Georgia teens preparing to get their full driver’s license.

You can apply for a learner’s permit once you are 15 years old and have passed written and vision tests.

It is the beginning step in the licensing program for young drivers ages 15 to 18.

  • Get Qualified

To qualify for a CP, you must:

    • Be at least 15 years of age.
    • Pass a Vision Exam
    • Pass a Knowledge Exam.
    • Have a parent, guardian, or authorized driver training instructor sign your application.
  • Gather What You'll Need

    • A completed application form.
    • $10 permit fee, paid for in cash or by credit card. (Check fees and terms for more information.)
    • Original documentation showing your identity, residential address, social security number, and U.S. citizenship or proof of lawful status in the United States. (Check Real ID requirements for more information.)
    • A signed and notarized Georgia DDS Certificate of School Enrollment (DS-1) from your school (these are only valid for 30 days).
    • If you’re not enrolled in school, a high school diploma, GED, special diploma, certification of high school completion, or proof of enrollment in a GED program or a postsecondary school.
    • A parent, guardian, or authorized driver training instructor to sign the application. The Responsible Adult must provide paperwork to show their relationship. This person can request to have your permit or license revoked at any time before your 18th birthday.
    • Applicants who are new to Georgia must turn in any out-of-state driver's license, permit, or ID card. If your driver’s license is not available, you must provide a Driving History (MVR).
  • Submit Your Application

    • Complete the application form. The information you submit will only be saved for 30 days. After that, you will need to submit another application.
    • Visit a DDS Customer Service Center.

    • Take and pass your Knowledge Exam.
    • If you pass, you will receive your learner’s permit and can begin driving under certain conditions.

    • At least 21 years old
    • Licensed to drive an approved vehicle
    • Capable of taking control over the vehicle
    • Sitting in the seat next to the driver.
