The ARCA-SWISS L-bracket Universal for Classic Quick Release is extremely helpful as you can switch between vertical or horizontal orientation of your camera while keeping the camera over the centre of your tripod head.

The base plate moves along a set of rods so you can leave room for tether cables etc when positioning the L-Bracket.
