Architizer A+ Awards winners announced Brooklyn, United StatesArchitizer
Competition, Event + ExhibitionBIG, OMA, REX, FR-EE are amongst winners to be honored at Award Gala in NYC during NYCxDesign on May 16th
Brooklyn, United States, 2013-03-20 - Architizer is pleased to announce the winners of its Inaugural A+ Awards. A total of 87 buildings won the Jury and Popular votes for each of the Award’s 52 categories. A highly-esteemed juryselected the Jury Winners, while the online voting public chose the winners of the Popular Choice Awards with an unprecedented 150,000 votes from all over the world. Instead of celebrating one architect and making architecture into something rarefied and arcane, the A+ Awards celebrate the diversity of the world’s architecture. The winners list runs the gamut of architectural typology and form, ranging from enormous towers to the smallest apartments and nearly everything in between. There are wind-swept memorials, a gallery/house with a pool in the middle of it, “iceberg” apartments in the Baltic, a conference center from the future, a floating chapel, a polka-dotted parametric pop-up, and the most sublime tourist path imaginable - the National Tourist Route Trollstigen by Reiulf Ramstad Architects. It set a record by winning four awards - the Jury and Popular Award in both the Government and Park categories - the most won by a single project.“The mission of the Architizer A+ Awards is to remind everyone in the world that they are fans of architecture, even if they don’t realize it. This year’s winners make our job easy. They are projects where noble ambitions match their formal sophistication - they represent the best architecture from across the globe - and more than one project that I had never seen before!” - Marc Kushner AIA, CEO Architizer. Two firms did exceptionally well, winning two projects each: JDS Architects’ won the Sports Category with the Holmenkollen Ski Jump and their Iceberg Dwellings won Residential Mid-Rise. Steven Holl Architects also won two categories - Residential High-Rise and Single Family Home.A total of fourteen projects won both the Jury and Popular vote including OMA’s Milstein Hall, Artech Architect’s China Steel Corporation Headquarters, and Rafael Vinoly Architect’s Carrasco International Airport.Other notable winners: Henn Architekten’s curvaceous Porsche Pavillion. Osterwold+Schmidt Bicycle Station won the Parking Structures category against a field of car parks. ArtsQuest in Bethlehem, PA was built on the grounds of a steel plant. MASS Design Group’s Butaro Hospital in Rwanda. An urban habitat for honeybees designed by grad students and a pavilion by Bunker Arquitectura made of recycled soda crates. LifeEdited, the tiny 420sf apartment that is the brainchild of Graham Hill won the Architecture Plus Living Small category.Winners will be celebrated at at a red carpet ceremony in New York City on May 16 during the inaugural week of NYCxDESIGN. In addition to the A+ Award Winners, Special Achievement Awards will be given to those who have raised awareness of the architectural field. The Special Achievement Awards include: Building of the Year, Lifetime Achievement, Patron of the Year, Architectural Advocate of the Year, and more.
