Beautiful people tend to ‘have it easy’ in life, being offered career and romantic opportunities that most of us miss out on.

Oddly, that seems to mean that attractive people are more likely to be conservative, a new study has shown – because they are blind to other people’s suffering.

Researchers from Susquehanna University and Illinois State University analysed data from previous surveys where respondents were assessed on physical attractiveness and their political views.

They found a clear link between being physically attractive and being right-wing.

Rolfe Peterson of Susquehanna University said, ‘The best way to describe our results is that, if you take two individuals that share similar characteristics like age, income and education but differ in attractiveness, our results show that higher attractiveness correlates with being more efficacious and leaning more conservative than the similar individual who is less attractive.

‘This is not deterministic; all attractive people are not conservative and all unattractive people are not liberals.’

Peterson took data from the 1972, 1974 and 1976 American National Studies surveys that asked people to evaluate the appearance of others.

These results were compared with the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study that focused on the physical characteristics of more than 10,000 high school students who were rated by others on their level of attractiveness.

The researchers believe that this is because attractive people tend to have relatively easy, happy lives – so they don’t see a need for state aid for the needy.

The researchers say, ‘’Even though this blind spot may not be universally held and physically attractive individuals do not always have easier lives, on average, physically attractive individuals face fewer hurdles navigating the social world.’
