Breeds Are German Shepherds Smart? Steffi Trott December 29, 2024 0 comments

German Shepherds are one of the most popular dog breeds worldwide, admired for their intelligence, loyalty, and versatility. The short answer to the question, “Are German Shepherds smart?” is a resounding YES—they are incredibly smart!

However, there’s much more to their intelligence than meets the eye. In this article, we’ll explore what makes German Shepherds so intelligent, how this intelligence manifests, and how you can bring out the best in your dog.

What Makes a Dog Intelligent?

Dog intelligence is classically measured by how trainable they are and how willing they are to work with their owner. However, this is really only one part of a dog’s intelligence. Their intelligence does not just revolve around being easy to train.

There are different aspects of intelligence, such as a dog’s ability to remember, learn behaviors, solve puzzles on their own, their emotional intelligence, and their social intelligence.

So, overall, we need to not just view the question of whether or not a dog is intelligent from the perspective of how trainable they are, but instead look at the various aspects of intelligence as a whole.

Intelligence in Different Breeds: How German Shepherds Stand Out

German Shepherds were bred to work tirelessly alongside their owners as herding and guard dogs. As such, they are definitely very intelligent when it comes to typical trainability aspects, such as their work ethic, their ability to focus on humans for extended periods, their memory, and their problem-solving skills.

In these categories, they rank much higher than many other dog breeds.

However, it’s important to note that German Shepherds’ emotional and social intelligence—how successfully they navigate certain social situations—is a bit lower. They are not bred to be happy-go-lucky, super social dogs.

To fully evaluate their intelligence, we must consider all the different aspects of intelligence, not just their trainability.

How Many Words Can a German Shepherd Learn?

In general, a dog’s ability to learn words has been largely underestimated. Recent research and experiments in the last two decades have shown that dogs are capable of learning an incredible number of words. For example, a Border Collie named Chaser learned over 1,000 different words.

At the time of this writing, there does not seem to have been any specific research into the absolute maximum number of words a German Shepherd can learn. However, it is reasonable to assume that they can learn at least 200 to 300 words, depending on how much time you dedicate to working on this with them.

Training Tips for Expanding Your Dog’s Vocabulary

Language learning in dogs is similar to language learning in human children. It starts out slowly, and it takes time for dogs to become solid in understanding a few words.

However, once they have learned about 10 words, their language-learning skills accelerate significantly, and they improve very quickly. If you want to expand how many words your German Shepherd knows, the best thing you can do is invest a lot of time working with them and talking to them. The more effort you put in, the faster their language-learning progress will be.

Are German Shepherds Too Smart for First-Time Dog Owners?

Some first-time dog owners find their German Shepherds difficult to train. They may feel like their dog is too clever for training or is trying to outsmart them.

This is not the case. Training is a complex endeavor, and nobody is born a perfect dog trainer. In fact, it is often more challenging to train high-energy dogs with a lot of drive and a strong work ethic, such as German Shepherds.

These dogs tend to be very excited by training, and beginner trainers may lack the timing and reward skills needed to work effectively with such an intense learner.

While German Shepherds are not generally too smart for first-time dog owners, it’s highly recommended that first-time owners seek out consistent professional training to make progress effectively. If you feel overwhelmed by your German Shepherd’s behavior and intelligence, don’t hesitate to get targeted training help.

Does Their Intelligence Lead to Stubbornness?

It is a common misconception that dogs are stubborn on purpose because they are intelligent. This is not true. Dogs do not resist training out of defiance.

If it seems like your dog is willfully ignoring training, chances are there’s something in the setup that needs to change. The environment may have too many distractions, there may be conflicting reinforcers, or your timing could be off. Your dog is not being “bad” just because—they need clarity and consistency in training.

Tips for Bringing Out the Best in Your German Shepherd

German Shepherds are high-energy dogs that get bored easily. It’s important to provide daily mentally stimulating activities, such as puzzle toys, visiting new places, or teaching them new tricks.

Exposing your dog to novel, enriching experiences keeps their mind sharp. The more monotonous your dog’s life is, the fewer opportunities they have to develop their intelligence. On the other hand, a life full of enrichment and new challenges will help them become even smarter.

Consistent Training for Long-Term Success

As high-strung working dogs, German Shepherds require consistent and ongoing training throughout their lives, especially during their first few years.

Regular training is essential for skills like coming when called or walking politely on a leash. German Shepherds excel in many dog sports and thrive when working closely with their owners. To help your German Shepherd reach their full potential, consistently invest time into training them.

The Bottom Line

Intelligence in dogs is often defined by how trainable they are, but it also includes other aspects such as memory, independent problem-solving, and social intelligence.

German Shepherds are highly trainable dogs with an exceptional work ethic. If you consistently train them and expose them to novel challenges, puzzles, and enrichment, they will grow into highly intelligent and capable companions.
