Jerome has had its ups and downs over time, from a population booming at 15,000 to a small thriving community of 500. The drive up the mountain to Jerome is magnificently scenic and from the town’s precarious perch on the steep slopes of Cleopatra Hill, there are panoramic views across the valley.

Fires and mining’s booms and busts left behind a variety of interesting buildings, today filled with quirky and unusual shops and galleries. Today you can buy kaleidoscopes, art glass, paintings, jewelry, pottery, minerals and many other things as you walk through the historic downtown area. Starvation won’t be a problem either as Jerome has a number of top-notch restaurants to ease the hunger pains. You can stop for ice cream, sandwiches or get an elegant meal. If you would like to enjoy Jerome’s nighttime charms there are several historic hotels and bed and breakfasts in town.

The town is small so it’s just best to park and walk but remember Jerome is built on a hill, everything is up or down so bring your hiking shoes.

Mine Museum At the Mine Museum you can learn about the history of Jerome and some of the interesting characters that called Jerome home. Like most mining towns, it was populated with saloons, ladies of the night, Chinese laundries and restaurants, average people trying to get by in a rough and tumble mining town. There was also an occasional shoot-out.

Gold King Mine Take a short drive out Perkinsville Road (1 mile past the Fire Station) to see the Gold King Mine. This is not your usual museum. It’s a large and eclectic collection of buildings, vehicles and equipment scattered around the site of the old Haynes Copper Mine. The children will enjoy the numerous chickens, donkeys and rabbits on site while the parents can browse the jumble of old machinery. Open year round, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. $4.00 Admission.

Montezuma Castle National Monument Gaze through the windows of the past into one of the best preserved cliff dwellings in North America. This 20-room high-rise apartment, nestled into a towering limestone cliff, tells a 1,000 year-old story of ingenuity and survival in an unforgiving desert landscape. Marveling at this enduring legacy of the Sinagua culture reveals a people surprisingly similar to ourselves. Adults (16 and over): $5.00

Montezuma's Well National Monument Montezuma's Well is a detached unit of Montezuma Castle National Monument located approximately 11 miles to the south.

Prescott National Forest Offers opportunities for hiking, picnicking, camping and a number of prehistoric Indian sites. At the lowest elevation, the primary vegetation is of the Sonoran Desert type. As the elevation rises, chaparral becomes common, followed by piñon pine and juniper. Above that, Ponderosa pine dominates the landscape.
