Fertilizer is used to grow crops quickly. It's not necessary to have, but will definitely make your farm run a bit more efficiently. In this guide, we are going to go over how to get fertilizer. There are a few different varieties of fertilizer, so let's look at these available types first.

Where To Get Fertilizer

To make fertilizer, you will need to combine any type of feces with thatch in a composting bin. This can be done by placing at least 50 thatch and three feces into the bin. After about 50 minutes, you will receive one fertilizer.

The compost bin is a level 15 craftable item; to unlock this engram, you will need to also have the storage box. Below, you can check out the required materials to make the compost bin.

  • 50 Wood
  • 15 Thatch
  • 12 Fiber

Once your compost bin has been built, you just need to throw in some feces and thatch, and then wait 50 minutes.

Above, we talked about each feces type compared to fertilizer. The total effective time for three feces is less than one fertilizer. For example, if you decide to just use three human feces, they will only last around 30 minutes, compared to the effective time of nine hours for one fertilizer. Every feces, excluding massive animal feces, is more efficient when converted into fertilizer. If you were to use three massive animal feces on a crop plot, it would last over 15 hours.

Overall, you should place every feces other than massive feces into a composting bin. With massive animal feces, you can place three in a crop plot and get better results than one fertilizer.

How To Get Feces

Feces, or poop, can be collected from any non-aquatic creature; even yourself. The frequency of a creature's poop depends on how much food they eat. Additionally, certain foods will speed up this process.

You can find feces anywhere land creatures are. As they wander around an area, they will poop; this can be picked up. If you have tamed creatures, you can feed them Stimberries to increase the number of feces produced.

To make one fertilizer, you will only need three feces. This isn't a lot, so you should easily be able to find enough.

Remember, the size of the feces does not impact the quality of the fertilizer made in the compost bin. Because of this, you can use human or small animal feces and get the same results if you were to use larger feces types.

Dung Beetles

Lastly, you can get fertilizer from Dung Beetles. This giant beetle will convert any feces placed in its inventory into fertilizer and oil. While a composting bin takes 50 minutes to process feces and thatch, it will only take around 15 minutes for a Dung Beetle to create fertilizer.

Dung Beetles will produce more fertilizer if they are given larger feces. For example, one human feces will convert to one fertilizer and one oil, while one massive animal feces will convert to 16 fertilizer and seven oil.

You can find Dung Beetles inside deep caves. This is a passive creature and can be tamed with non-violent methods.

Now that you have your fertilizer, let's go over how to use it. One fertilizer will provide 54,000 units of fertilization to your crops. Because of this, it is the most effective method for fertilizing crops. Once a plant is fully grown, the fertilizer will continue to fertilize for almost seven days.

To use fertilizer, stand next to a crop plot and press the 'Use' button. This will open the plot's inventory, allowing you to place the fertilizer inside.

With seeds and a water source present, your crops will begin to grow. Fertilizer lasts a long time, so after you set up your crop plot, you will not have to worry about fertilizer for a while.

That's all there is to know about fertilizer! Although you can survive off of eating meat, you should definitely invest in a few crop plots and composting bins. Berries and crops are important for taming, creating dyes, and eating.
