5000 Art and Professional Practices Seminar

This course is offered every Autumn and Spring Term

Students explore, practice, and analyze a range of approaches to presenting their artistic practice in visual, oral and written forms. Students explore multiple options, methods and strategies related to career choices and professional development. Students develop a variety of skills to sustain their practice after graduating with their BA or BFA.

Prereq: Sr or Grad standing in Art.

5001 Aspects of Art and Technology I

This course is offered every Autumn Term Only

Students explore and practice the technical, aesthetic, and theoretical topics in the field of Art and Technology. Includes interactive installation, biological, surveillance/telepresence, narrative, algorithmic, and performative art.

Prereq: Permission of instructor. Repeatable to a maximum of 9 cr hrs.

5004 Drawing Now

This course is offered every even-year Autumn Term Only

Students expand approaches and definitions of drawing in relation to the chosen topic for the semester. Students explore drawing through individualized projects and in groups to cultivate/develop/refine ideas, research, experimentation, critical thinking and installation methods. Students explore/interpret contemporary issues in drawing, and develop a body of drawings as well as a drawing practice.

Prereq: Permission of instructor. Repeatable to a maximum of 12 cr hrs.

5006 Alternative Printmaking

This course is offered every even-year Autumn Term Only

Students explore various reproduction technologies including analogue, digital, mechanical, photographic and hybrid approaches. Students engage in a rigorous practice of production, critique and interpretation of the conceptual, theoretical and aesthetic properties of these methods as a means for developing advanced, individualized research.

Prereq: 4006 or 4056, or permission of instructor. Repeatable to a maximum of 9 cr hrs.

5007 Advanced Sculpture

This course is offered every Autumn Term Only

With rotating faculty, students develop their own visual vocabulary and direction utilizing multiple media. Instruction: wood construction, metal fabrication, casting, and paper making. Sound art, video projection, installation, performance, sewing, and photogrammetry are supported.

Prereq: 3017, or permission of instructor. Repeatable to a maximum of 9 cr hrs.

5009 Film/Video III

This course is offered every even-year Autumn Term Only

Students explore in depth one technology or strategy related to experimental film and video art. Topics have included 16mm film, expanded cinema, and cameraless filmmaking.

Prereq: 3009 or MvngImg 2201; or permission of instructor. Repeatable to a maximum of 9 cr hrs.

5019 Film/Video IV

This course is offered every even-year Spring Term Only

Students explore thematic issues within experimental film and video art or in the relationship of those fields to other art forms or modes of filmmaking.

5101 Aspects of Art and Technology II

This course is offered every Spring Term Only

Students explore topical art science relationships while building connections between micro and macro, plants and humans, local and global, anthropocentric and eco-centric. Both scientific and artistic methods are used in creative projects surrounding climate stress & adaptation, biotech/bio art, constructed ecosystems, biomimicry, hyper-nature, symbiosis.

Prereq: Permission of instructor. Repeatable to a maximum of 9 cr hrs.

5202 Mold Making

This course is offered every Autumn Term Only

Students will design, fabricate, and use of a wide spectrum of mold-making techniques. Exploring the process of prototyping and generating multiples, students will generate functional and expressive artworks analyzing form with the purpose of reproducing it.

Repeatable to a maximum of 6 cr hrs.

5215 Social/Documentary Photography

This course is offered every even-year Autumn Term Only

Student will engage in an advanced production course with emphasis on the conceptual frameworks underpinning the documentary tradition in historical and contemporary photography.

Prereq: 3005 (4005).

5254 Painting Now

This course is offered every even-year Spring Term Only

Students expand approaches and definitions of painting in relation to the chosen topic for the semester. Topics range from studies in abstraction, figuration, conceptual approaches, materials and techniques, landscape/light/space, installation, etc. Independently and in groups, students challenge themselves to make paintings through rigorous experimentation, research and critical reflection.

Prereq: 3054. Repeatable to a maximum of 6 cr hrs.

5302 Material Science for Artists

This course is offered every odd-year Spring Term Only

Advanced studio focused on geologic and chemical earth science as it pertains to art. Safe and efficient testing habits will explore applications such as clay and glaze formulation. Parallels will be drawn in metals, glass, paper, and paint.

Prereq: 2502 (340), 2602 (342), and 3502 and 3602, or 440 and 442; or permission of instructor. Not open to students with credit for 640 and 644.

5335 Digital Imaging: Input/Output

This course is offered every Spring Term Only

Exploration of the use of digital technologies in creating and printing images with emphasis on aesthetic content and excellent craft.

Prereq: 5205 (524) and 5215 (695.04), or permission of instructor. Concur: 5225. Not open to students with credit for 695.07.

5445 Alternative Processes in Photography

Advanced production and study of antique and alternative processes in photography such as non-silver emulsions, through the creation of a cohesive body of work.

Prereq: 5225, 5235, 695.07, or 695.08; or written permission of instructor. Concur: 4995 or 690. Not open to students with credit for 695.06.

5502 Special Projects – Ceramics

This course is offered every Autumn Term AND every even-year Spring Term.

Students explore ceramics through individualized projects to cultivate, develop and refine ideas, research, experimentation, critical thinking. Students explore and interpret contemporary issues in ceramics and develop a body of ceramics objects as well as a ceramic practice.

Prereq: 4002 or 4012, or permission of instructor. Repeatable to a maximum of 9 cr hrs.

5903 Advanced Glass Studio Practice

This course is offered every Autumn Term Only

Group studio course designed to facilitate independent work using glass as a primary material for expressing conceptual concerns and creating original artworks.

Prereq: Permission of instructor. Repeatable to a maximum of 12 cr hrs.

5995 Imagemakers' Seminar

This course is offered every even-year Autumn Term Only

Students expand approaches and definitions of photography in relation to the chosen topic for the semester. Topics may range from but are not limited to studies in abstraction, performance for the camera, documentary, conceptual approaches, materials and aesthetics, and the intersections of issues of identity with contemporary photographic practices.

Prereq: 3005 (4005), or permission of instructor.
