Karen's Review of Our Art Course
Online Course Student Karen Bevan, Shares Her Little Art School Story So Far
Two years into my art adventure with the Little Art School, I thought it would be good to pause and reflect on the amazing journey, so far! I have always wanted to paint, and when finally, at the age of 65, I decided this was the time, I had no idea where to start or even what materials to buy. It was all far too bewildering. So I did what we do and took a quick Google. Here I stumbled upon The Little Art School. I signed up, and before I knew it, a box of art materials and lessons arrived in the post. What excitement! I will never forget the joy of that first lesson, and that sense of achievement of drawing, painting and completing a picture, I could do it!! Several art boxes have been delivered since that first lesson, and I have now completed nearly 120 lessons. I have learnt how to draw and how to paint using watercolours, gouache, pastels, acrylics and oils.

I have looked at and learnt about artists over the centuries. Some, like Turner, I already knew, but others I knew very little about. Presently, I’m learning about Klimt, who is my favourite. I am already planning a trip to Vienna to see his amazing work first-hand.
I am now an art addict; every spare minute I am to be found sketching, doodling, painting or taking photos to paint. I LOVE it! Each term turns out to be my favourite! I am presently learning about using textures in painting, and, once again, this seems to be my favourite so far! Opening my art box and seeing gold leaf in the box, was almost too much!! I now have the confidence to go to an art shop and know what I need to buy. I am learning what makes an interesting and engaging painting, how to compose paintings and what colours and materials I should use.
I have been truly thrilled with the whole process, as well as the finished articles. My inner artist has been released in the most joyful way. Patience and structure have been key elements of the course, guiding me from learning how to hold a pencil to how to paint using palette knives and oils.
A key aspect of the course, making this time so special, has been meeting and making new friends with like-minded people on the LAS Facebook group. Support and encouragement by the bucket load. Last year, Little Art School held a summer school where they learned to draw and paint outdoors. A group of us attended, all of whom had met via the Facebook group, but now in person. It was such a magical week, that it is to be repeated; we are all off again this summer, I literally cannot wait!
We asked Karen to choose her favourite paintings, one from each course level she’s completed so far. Here they are:

After Monet, Karen’s favourite painting from Level 1 Term 3 of our Course…‘ This painting was the culmination of term 1. I could not believe I could copy a Monet painting – Wow!’

Giraffe in pastel is Karen’s favourite painting from Level 2 of our Course. ‘This was one of my first pastel paintings; I just loved how suddenly the giraffe emerged!’

After Van Gogh, Karen’s favourite painting from Level 3 of our Course…’I absolutely adored this lesson in level 3. It was such a freeing way to paint, using acrylics; I could not believe what I achieved, with careful instruction every step of the way by my trusted tutor, Joanne’.

After Hopper, Karen’s favourite painting from Level 4 of our Course… ‘It was very difficult to choose just one painting from level 4 to share, but I love this lighthouse, painted in oils. I love the light in this painting and how easy it is to blend oil paints.’

Christine's Review of Our Art Course
Student Christine Wood, Shares How Our Course Reignited Her Passion for Art
Having been a child who loved to draw and paint, I foolishly ‘gave up’ art at fourteen or fifteen when we had to choose subjects for ‘O’ level, as they were called then, and despite dabbling over the years, it wasn’t until I retired nearly fifty years later, that I decided to attend a weekly art class. That was wonderful but fairly unstructured. And then….. we moved to Somerset where I could find no similar course.
I don’t know how I came across the advert for the Little Art School Adult Online Course, but it sounded just right – systematic lessons that I could access at home any time with all the materials and guidance supplied. I took the plunge and ordered the whole first year in one fell swoop – an early Christmas present to myself.
That was just over two years ago, and I haven’t looked back.
See Christine's Art Journey and Examples of Her Art
The arrival and unpacking of that first box was so exciting, but it’s the same with each subsequent package – there’s always something new to inspire, the latest gadget in the third level being the amazing ‘stay wet’ palette.
I soon got stuck in, always worried that I wouldn’t be able to complete the task at hand, but after watching Joanne on the video and persevering, lo and behold, it was done. A masterpiece – well, I thought so, and the loyal Facebook group usually think so! I’m continually amazed by each finished painting and now have quite a stack of them, some of which I’ve tackled twice or more.
It’s hard to pick favourites, but I felt almost like a real artist trying to copy Van Gogh’s sunflowers this week. His vibrant yellows are just so beautiful:

Another challenge that sticks in my mind was the perspective nightmare of the Parisian Cafe, which I was so proud of in the end:

And I love the drawing practices we’re given, especially the Andrea del Verrachio ‘Head of a woman with (VERY!) elaborate coiffure’ from Level 3 Term 1:

Whatever the topic, it’s always totally absorbing and leaves a little bubble of happiness upon completion. I’m really looking forward (with my usual dose of trepidation) to future challenges, notably oils. I’m so glad I discovered The Little Art School Online Adult Course.
