How to create an articulation agreement

Articulation agreements are formal partnerships between two colleges or universities documenting that a program or series of classes completed at one institution will be accepted to satisfy particular requirements at the other institution. These agreements create seamless pathways for students transferring between postsecondary institutions.

If you would like to begin the process of developing an articulation agreement between your academic program and an academic program at another institution, or if you would like to revise an existing agreement, please complete the form using this link. This will begin a process that contains curriculum worksheets and will assist you through the formation of the agreement including digital signatures.

How to articulate individual courses

If there is an individual course from another college or university that your academic department would like to accept as an equivalent to a UNI course, please contact the Office of Admissions transfer team at [email protected] for assistance in updating the equivalency information in the student information system.

Existing transfer resources

  • Statewide Articulation Agreements create more seamless pathways among postsecondary institutions in Iowa.
  • Transfer Plans of Study are tools used to provide guidance to prospective students. These plans detail major-specific information about transferability of course credits between UNI and partner institutions. To update these plans, please email your changes to [email protected].
  • Students compare transfer courses with equivalent UNI courses, using Transfer Course Equivalency Lists or the Transfer Plan-It Tool.
  • View additional Transfer Tools to utilize as necessary.

The University of Northern Iowa endorses the Joint Statement on Transfer and Award of Academic Credit approved by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers (AACRAO), Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), and the American Council of Education (ACE). The current issue of Transfer Credit Practices of Selected Educational Institutions, published by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, and publications of the American Council on Education are examples of references used by the university in determining transfer credit.
