With its tall white spire towering over the Yarra River, Arts Centre Melbourne is a distinctive landmark.

Located at 100 St Kilda Road on the south bank of the Yarra, Arts Centre Melbourne with its tall golden spire is a distinctive landmark. Melbourne Theatre Company has been a major tenant at Arts Centre Melbourne since it opened with our production of Medea in 1984.

Large scale productions will appear each season in the 880-seat Playhouse, while the Fairfax Studio will remain the home for smaller-scale works.

Spaces

Fairfax Studio

The Fairfax studio is an intimate 376-seat drama space. Since 1994, Melbourne Theatre Company has produced smaller scale productions there as part of our mainstage season.

Playhouse

Specifically designed for drama, the Playhouse has been a major venue for Melbourne Theatre Company since it opened in 1983. The theatre seats 880 people and is particularly suited to large scale dramatic works. The auditorium is split into two tiers, a raked stalls and a balcony.

Melbourne Theatre Company performs at the Arts Centre Melbourne, Playhouse and Fairfax Studio. For productions at these venues you can also book tickets via Arts Centre Melbourne, by calling 1300 182 183.

Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation

To help facilitate the delivery of the $1.7 billion Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation, the remaining section of Sturt Street between Kavanagh Street and Southbank Boulevard will be closed from 9 March 2023.

Can I still park at Arts Centre Melbourne and The Primrose Potter Australian Ballet Centre car parks from 9 March?

Yes, you can. Access to the car parks via Kavanagh Street will be maintained throughout the life of the project and beyond.

  • Wheelchair and mobility access

    Facilities for wheelchair access and seating that allows more room for the use of mobility aids are available in all theatres. Please make your requirements known when booking.

  • Captioning and FM hearing system

    An FM hearing system is available for all performances in the Sumner, Playhouse and Fairfax Studio at no charge upon presentation of identification to theatre ushers. Audience members receive either a headset or neck loop enabling use of a hearing aid via the T-switch.
  • Companion Cards

    Melbourne Theatre Company offers Companion Card holders a free ticket for their companion to attend the performance and assist with their access needs.

    Southbank Theatre and Arts Centre Melbourne are within easy distance of Flinders Street Station. After exiting the station simply walk south down St Kilda Road (away from the CBD), or catch a south-bound tram from the Flinders Street Station/Federation Square tram stop. More Info
  • Tram

    For routes travelling up and down St Kilda Rd (numbers 1, 3, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67, 72) you can get off at the Arts Centre stop and walk to Southbank Theatre and Arts Centre Melbourne. Route 1 (to South Melbourne Beach) goes down Southbank Blvd, and stops on Sturt St just outside Melbourne Recital Centre, located next to Southbank Theatre.
