Assassin's Creed's Next Game Will Be Announced In ... - IGN

Ubisoft isn't quite ready to formally announce a new Assassin's Creed game — at least not yet — but it does have plenty of other content in store for Assassin's Creed Valhalla, including a brand-new rogulite mode due this summer.

Titled Forgotten Saga, the mode is described as a "fresh take" on the series' formula and will be free to all players. It brings to mind Hades, the smash hit roguelite from Supergiant Games; only instead of the Greek underworld, it will feature Niflheim, which fulfills a similar role in Norse mythology.

As many fans have observed, myth has taken on a greater role in the Assassin's Creed series of late. Conceived as a fairly realistic take on history, the series has lately been crawling with mythological creatures like Surtr. Forgotten Saga's journey to Niflheim appears to be more of the same.

Assassin's Creed Review
by Hilary Goldstein
November 13, 2007

Our Verdict: If you play Assassin's Creed for an hour, you will probably think it's a fantastic game. But as Assassin's progresses, its dual storylines and repetitive quests begin to grow tiresome. There are so many great individual elements, but they are lost among the myriad of poor decisions from Ubisoft Montreal. Wasting the big twist on the first five minutes of gameplay is a tremendous mistake, but not nearly as damaging as the ill-conceived assassination investigation quests, which get old fast. The exploration aspects of Assassin's Creed and the combat are both plusses in my book. But those two elements are only a small part of the whole.
View 37 Images
Assassin's Creed: Altair's Chronicles Review
by Craig Harris
February 6, 2008

Even with the issues, I had a good time playing through Assassin's Creed multiple times. I say multiple times because, yes, that single save file can wreak havoc on your game's progress if you decide to jump around the stages using the level select feature. Altair's Chronicles definitely needed a couple more weeks of polishing up before Ubisoft's publishing date, but as a finished product it's a fun game for as long as it lasts.

Assassin's Creed 2 Review
by David Clayman
November 17, 2009

Assassin's Creed II transforms a middling action game into an intriguing and consistently entertaining open-world adventure. Based on this game, Ubisoft Montreal should run a clinic on how to iterate a franchise and if the series continues in this vein, the next installment will take aim at Rockstar's best efforts. The experience is layered, unique, and shows an incredible attention to detail. This is one case where the sequel has triumphed over the original by catching the gameplay up to the already excellent visuals. No matter what your preconceptions are about Assassin's Creed II, the game is well worth your time and money.

Assassin's Creed 2: Discovery Review
by Craig Harris
November 18, 2009

I was one of the few reviewers that legitimately enjoyed the first Assassin's Creed on the Nintendo DS. It had its problems but it was a solid Gameloft effort that captured the console gameplay in a more limiting handheld experience. The sequel, helmed by Griptonite, is a much more ambitious design but in a more restrictive 2D environment. The result is a much more fulfilling and fun DS experience that runs parallel to the far more elaborate console production, and while I had problems with the blind jumps and trial-and-error, mapless gameplay, I had a great time with Assassin's Creed II: Discovery.

Assassin's Creed Bloodlines Review
by David Clayman
November 18, 2009

Assassin's Creed Bloodlines is a game that will only appeal to those who are already enthralled with the Assassin's Creed universe. It successfully replicates the basic feel of Altair's previous adventure, but it also plays into the weaknesses of the PSP hardware. Three dimensional free running cannot be successful without camera control and the combat is one dimensional. The developers did the best they could within the confines of a game design that for now, can only properly work on the big screen.

On top of Forgotten Saga, Ubisoft also announced that Assassin's Creed fans can expect one final installment in Eivor's tale. Like Forgotten Saga, this content will be a free chapter for all players and will arrive at the end of 2022.

The announcements were part of Assassin's Creed 15th Anniversary Celebration Steam, which celebrated the release of the original Assassin's Creed in 2007. The Mastery Challenge Pack 2 and the Armory will be returning as part of the event, as will festivals. Ubisoft also announced that there will be new caves to explore as part of the quest to solve the mystery of the Tombs of the Fallen.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla was first released back in 2020, with its most recent expansion being Dawn of Ragnarok. Reception has been muted for the Norse-centric entry in the long-running series, leading to speculation that Ubisoft might be ready to move on to the previously-confirmed Assassin's Creed Infinity, but the development team seems to have a few more surprises in store for this year.

Asside from Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Ubisoft announced that Assassin's Creed Origin's new 4K 60fps patch is now available, and that it will be free to play from June 16 to June 20. Valhalla's Discovery Tour, Viking Age, is also receiving a stand-alone release on consoles, Stadia, and (at a later date) Luna.

Expect lots more content in the run-up to the announcement of the next Assassin's Creed, and keep an eye on IGN for even more as the Summer of Gaming continues.
