There are many refined resources in Astroneer, and Aluminum is one that players will definitely want to obtain in some quantity. The process of earning Aluminum centers around a natural resource called Laterite, though some fans may be unclear about where to find it. This guide is here to help those players locate Laterite in Astroneer, and it will also provide details on exactly how the resource is refined into Aluminum once some of it has been obtained.
Astroneer: How to Get Laterite
To obtain Laterite, players must look beneath the surface of any planet in Astroneer. Caves, which can be encountered while exploring, provide easy access to these underground areas, though fans should exercise some amount of care when they are descending into them. Players that do not heed this warning may find that their progress toward earning Laterite is temporarily halted after their character has fallen a significant distance and died.

Once a fan of survival video games has safely made their way into a cave, they should start searching on the walls and on the ground for stacks of blue-and-red circles. These stacks typically have a cylindrical form, and indeed they are nodes of Laterite. Upon locating these nodes, players should simply use their terrain tools to extract the Laterite, and they may want to collect quite a bit of the resource before they start converting it into the Aluminum that they need.
For the sake of completeness, it is worth mentioning that Laterite can also be obtained from the Trade Platform, a module in Astroneer that is made in the Medium Printer. More specifically, players can exchange one Scrap for one Laterite at the Platform, though it is not recommended that this method be relied on heavily. Indeed, it is not particularly difficult to extract Laterite from caves, and fans will likely be better served by saving their Scrap for bigger things that may come up in the future.
Astroneer: How to Make Aluminum
After collecting some Laterite, players should take it to their Smelting Furnace. For full clarity, this crafting module is made at the Medium Printer, and fans have likely used it before to create things like Ceramic in Astroneer. In fact, the process of making Aluminum is extremely similar to the process of making Ceramic, as players must simply feed Laterite into the Smelting Furnace and wait for it to output the refined resource that they are interested in.
