There are two kinds of Austinites: Those with 512 phone numbers … and those without.

Since its introduction in 2013, the 737 area code in Central Texas has become a blatant social marker distinguishing recent transplants from longtime residents. Seeking to blend in with the locals, newcomers or people switching numbers may have asked for a 512 number from their carrier — only to be told that no such numbers are available.

All of this prompted Kelvin Thompson to ask our Austin Answered project: “How many folks have gotten the new 737 area code? What’s it like having that strange area code?”
