(WHSV) - With tastes of warm weather, it’s always tempting to start gardening or growing plants outside of your home. However, spring can bring anything to the area and it’s important to know when it’s likely safe to start on those type of projects.
For the Valley, the average last freeze of the season is in the last week of April. For many areas in West Virginia, it’s about a week later during the first week of May. For our higher mountain locations such as the Allegheny Mountains, on average it takes until mid-May to see the last freeze of the season.
For a last frost, it is about two weeks later for most areas. In the Valley, the average last frost is in early to mid May. For our West Virginia locations, it typically takes until mid to late May to see a last frost. For our higher mountain locations, frosts typically occur until the last week of May.
Keep in mind, these time periods are average dates. A freeze or frost could happen later. When that occurs, the National Weather Service typically issues freeze warnings and frost advisories should one of these events happen at a later than average date.
It’s been about a week to 10 days across our entire area since we saw a freeze but don’t let your guard down. Serious cold spells can happen far into spring.
