Chili’s awesome blossom petals is one of my favorite Chili’s appetizers. It’s just so crispy and flavorful, especially with the accompanying creamy awesome blossom dipping sauce. I always order this crispy appetizer whenever I go to Chili’s, and I really wanted to learn how to make one for myself. I also wanted to enjoy the fresh onion-flavored crispiness within the comforts of my own home, and I did manage to make one! It turns out that it’s really easy to make a homemade version of this blooming onion recipe. That’s why I’m sharing this awesome blossom petals Chili’s copycat recipe so that you can also munch on some crispy and savory fried onion petals at home.

What are awesome blossom petals, you ask? Well, it’s actually an appetizer similar to fried onion rings. These awesome blossom petals also have a deep-fried coating. Instead of breadcrumbs, the awesome blossom uses a flavorful seasoning as its breading. It’s made with a combination of ground black pepper, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, seasoned salt, flour, and buttermilk. This seasoned coating gives each onion petal that delicious savoriness, and crunchiness when fried.

After making the coating, I cut the large onion next into the shape of “petals” and coated them individually with the seasoning. This is why it’s called awesome blossom petals. There’s another version known as the blooming onion flower where the large onion is cut differently. Just by its name, this other kind of Chili’s appetizer resembles a “blooming flower” since the onion is not cut all the way through the stem. You can also try making this version next time for a fun variety.

I deep-fried the onions, and then made the sauce while waiting for each batch of onion petals to cook and turn golden brown. This Chili’s awesome blossom sauce inspired dip is also easy to make. Just grab a mixing bowl and combine the ingredients! Its rich and tangy flavor mostly comes from the creamy horseradish sauce and sour cream.

By this time, the onions were done and I was ready to dig in. I let them cool on the wire rack and then served them on a plate with the dipping sauce on the side. I really enjoyed munching on these onion petals, and the awesome blossom sauce added that creamy tanginess to each bite.
