When it comes to a fantastic vegetable side, I can never say no to this bacon wrapped asparagus recipe. It only takes a few minutes of prep to throw it together, and it is always a hit. I can throw it on a charcuterie for a party, add it to the dinner table as a side, or eat it as a low-carb snack option on busy days when I need a little something extra to enjoy.
Or serve it with Fried Chicken, corn bread, and smashed potatoes for a complete meal!

The thing I love about this bacon wrapped asparagus is it is made in the oven. This means no need to carefully watch it to make sure it isn’t burning, or to have hands on cooking time. Simply wrap the asparagus with the bacon of your choice (even turkey bacon would work), and bake until it is perfectly crispy.
What is the best way to cook asparagus wrapped in bacon?
The best way to cook asparagus wrapped in bacon is in the oven. It gives you even cooking, a nice crispy, crunchy exterior to the bacon, and a crispy, but tender asparagus stalk. And boy oh boy is it delicious when cooked this way. Of course there are some tricks to getting it to turn out just right.- Trim your asparagus. No one wants to eat that woody end, so you can cut the ends off, or do what I like to do, which is gently bend the asparagus and let it snap off where it sees fit. It won’t snap in the woody section, so this way you insure you aren’t getting tough asparagus.
- Cut the bacon in half lengthwise to make it thinner. This way you get bacon wrapped around the entire stalk without a ton of overlap, and without pieces of the asparagus exposed.
- Cook the bacon on a baking sheet, but put a rack, like a cooling rack, inside the baking sheet, and the bacon on top of that. This allows for better air flow, which will give you a more even cooking of the asparagus and the bacon.
- Flip half way through. Even though the rack on the baking sheet helps a lot with even cooking, I still find that by flipping the bacon wrapped asparagus half way through the cooking time gives me a crispier result.
How do you make bacon wrapped asparagus bundles?
If you want to make bacon wrapped asparagus bundles, you basically follow the same method, but instead of wrapping only one stalk of asparagus, you are going to wrap a bundle, or several stalks. And in this case, you don’t need to cut your bacon, as the thicker slice, and several stalks works well together.
I have found when I am making a bundle of asparagus the best ratio of asparagus to bacon is 4 or 5 stalks to a bundle. If I do more than that, the asparagus does not have a chance to cook through before the bacon is done.
If you want a larger bundle of asparagus, you will want to par boil or partially cook the bacon before you wrap it in bacon.

How do you cook bacon wrapped asparagus on the stove?
If you want to cook bacon wrapped asparagus on the stove top, you will need a cast iron skillet or a good sized, heavy duty skillet, and preferably one with a lid. Heat the skillet to medium heat, and add the bacon wrapped asparagus. Cook until bacon is crispy, then flip, put the lid on between so the asparagus steams. Remove from heat and enjoy! How do you grill asparagus wrapped in bacon?
If you want to grill your bacon wrapped asparagus you are essentially going to do the same thing as if you cook it stove top. Heat your grill to 400 degrees, and place the asparagus on it. Then watch for the bacon to crisp up, and turn over to complete cooking. When grilled, sometimes the ends will start to char before the bacon is done, this adds some nice flavor, but watch your asparagus carefully, as you don’t want it to burn and become inedible. One trick I have learned is that if I dip the ends in wanter, they will steam, but not burn as quickly, which gives the bacon time to cook and get crispy.
How do you trim asparagus?
Trimming asparagus is a topic of much debate. But it couldn’t be any easier. When you bend an asparagus spear, it snaps at exactly the spot where tough stalk meets tender spear. This means you can toss the tough portion out, and are left with only the tender parts that are so tasty. Because every spear is different, and that stalk part may be longer or shorter on each piece, it is great to do this individually or in small groups of asparagus. You can take a small handful, and bend all of them at once.
After you bend and snap (hahaha legally blonde those babies), discard the tough stalk part, and just wrap the tender delicious parts in bacon.
