Frequently Asked Questions
PRODUCTION
Does the production of bamboo clothing harm pandas? Our bamboo crop is FSC-certified. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) provides the gold standard in environmental forest certification and promotes responsible management of the world's forests, ensuring the harvest of timber does not destroy habitats of protected species or take away precious resources from the people that depend on them.
Is bamboo clothing more sustainable than cotton?Bamboo clothing is a sustainable alternative to cotton. Bamboo is one of the most sustainable and renewable resources in the world and requires no pesticides, fertilisers and very little water to grow. The main issue with cotton farming is the significant use of water and pesticides.
Are chemicals used in the production of bamboo clothing?Chemical solvents are used to produce bamboo fabric as they are needed to soften and break down the bamboo wood. These chemicals are broken down to salt and water by the end of the process and contained within the factory. Our bamboo fibre is OEKO-Tex100 certified which means there is no trace of harmful chemicals in the end product.
Is bamboo clothing made in Australia? Most bamboo clothing is made in China. While Bamboo Body is Australian owned and designed, bamboo is not grown and processed at scale within Australia making it difficult to produce in volumes here. We do have an Australian Made collection of tshirts made from bamboo and organic cotton. The Australian Made collection can be viewed here.
Is bamboo clothing ethically made?We take the welfare of the people in our factories very seriously. We have a long-standing relationship with our garment workers and are committed to keeping high standards of safety. Our clothing factories don’t employ workers under 18 and their working conditions and payment are fair and above standards. Read more about our ethical production practices.

How much bamboo is in bamboo clothing? The two main blends of fabric we use are 93% bamboo viscos 7% spandex and 70% bamboo viscose, 25% organic cotton and 5% spandex. We also have a 100% woven bamboo collection and our bamboo knits are made from a blend of bamboo (95%), cashmere (3%) and wool (2%). Is bamboo clothing organic?Bamboo Body clothing is made with organically grown bamboo. Our bamboo crop is grown without the use of pesticides, fertilisers or chemicals. No irrigation is required and there is no genetic modification. However the bamboo fabric is not certified organic. Is bamboo clothing suitable for yoga class?Bamboo clothing is ideal for yoga as bamboo is a natural fibre and the fabric is soft, comfortable and breathable. We recommend more fitted styles for inversions / downward-facing poses. You also need more fitted pants, or pants tapered at the knee or ankle so avoid tripping or riding up.
CARE
Are there specific care instructions for bamboo clothing? There is no need to dry clean bamboo clothing, however we do recommend turning garments inside out and avoid washing with abrasive fabrics such as denim or Velcro. Machine wash with like colours and do not rub or bleach. Line dry in the shade or tumble dry on low. Cool iron if required.
Do you need to iron bamboo clothing? You don't have to iron bamboo clothing if you store garments neatly. If items are scrunched up, they will need ironing as none of our fabrics have been treated for crease resistance. We recommend drying clothes in the shade and hanging them to dry to reduce creasing.
Does bamboo clothing wrinkle?Bamboo clothing will wrinkle if not stored neatly. If items are scrunched up, they will need ironing as none of our fabrics have been treated for crease resistance. Any creases will soften with wear, hanging the garments up or giving them a cool iron.
Will bamboo clothing shrink? If you follow normal care instructions bamboo clothing should not shrink.
Does bamboo clothing stretch? Some bamboo fabric blends, particularly bamboo / spandex, are designed to stretch while still retaining its shape. This is why bamboo clothing is such a great option for maternity wear. 100% woven bamboo has less stretch and will hold its shape.
