Batman: 7 Characters Who Have Become Robin - Collider

Robin is one of the most iconic sidekicks in comic books history. Even though Batman started as a solo act, fans can all agree that there is no better pairing than the dynamic duo of Batman and Robin. Even Batman himself has admitted that having a Robin around keeps him grounded and in check.

The title of Robin has been given to many characters throughout the years. Most of the Robins were brought into the superhero life at a young age and, as they grew up, split off from the Dark Knight to become their own heroes. Even though each Robin is unique, they all have one thing in common; Batman.

Dick Grayson

Dick Grayson was the first character to become the Boy Wonder. Dick and his parents were acrobats in a circus called Haly’s Circus. During one of their performances, there was an incident causing Dick’s parents to fall to their death while he watched. Luckily for Dick, Bruce Wayne was in the crowd that night. Bruce saw the young boy go through a similar experience as him and decided to take in Dick as his ward.

Bruce eventually told Dick that he was secretly Batman and trained Dick as Robin. Bruce’s intentions were to help Dick find the person who murdered his parents at the circus. Growing up as Robin took a toll on Dick, however. When he turned 18, Dick decided to leave Bruce in order to become his own hero. Thus, Nightwing was born.

Jason Todd

Jason Todd is the second character to take the mantle. Jason grew up in the slums of Gotham. He was in and out of foster homes, constantly running away, surrounded by violence and drugs all his life. One night, in the same alleyway that Bruce saw his parents murdered in, Batman happens upon Jason trying to steal the wheels of the Batmobile. Instead of arresting him, Bruce decided to help him.

Bruce took in Jason, trying to keep him off the streets of Gotham and on a good path. Eventually, Jason also became Robin. Jason was more aggressive than Dick, more irrational. One night, Jason was captured by the Joker and murdered, leaving Bruce even more of a broken man. Jason, thanks to Ra’s Al Ghul, was brought back to life, taking the new name of the Red Hood.

Tim Drake

Tim Drake was the third Robin. Tim’s detective skills far overshadow that of the other Robins, both previous and future. Even Batman himself has called Tim the “true world’s greatest detective”. Tim was a huge fan of Batman and Robin (Dick Grayson) and often followed the news of their adventures. One day, while doing some digging, he discovers the secret identity of Batman, and then both Robins.

Tim confronted a broken Bruce Wayne about his secret identity and requested to become the next Robin. Bruce, after losing Jason, refused. However, Tim convinced Bruce and Dick to let him join them as “Batman needs a Robin”. Eventually, Tim became his own hero as well after being Robin. He called himself Red Robin.

Jarro

Starro is an alien conqueror in the shape of a giant starfish. Starro fights by releasing spores of tiny starfish that take over the minds of whoever comes in contact. Starro was a Justice League-level threat that took the whole team to stop. Once stopped, a piece of Starro was kept in a jar at their HQ.

The part of Starro kept in the jar eventually became its own being named Jarro. Jarro grew attached to Batman and even often calls him “father”. He wanted to prove to Batman that he can be the best Robin and even convinced Batman to give him a chance. Jarro became the new Robin and was even said to be Batman’s favorite Robin, admitted by Batman himself.

Stephanie Brown

Stephanie Brown was only Robin for a short time. When she first appeared, Stephanie was an amateur crime-fighter by the name of Spoiler. She grew a relationship with Tim Drake when Tim became Robin. The two even formed a romantic relationship. However, when Tim’s father discovered he was Robin, he made Tim hang up the cape as it was too dangerous for his son.

Stephanie caught Tim and a classmate getting “too close”, causing her to believe he cheated. Angry at Tim, Stephanie put all her focus on crime-fighting. Stephanie eventually also convinces Bruce to allow her to become the new Robin in Tim’s stead. Even though Bruce never liked Stephanie because of her past and her family’s past, he allowed her to become the next Robin and trained her. Stephanie later gave up the title of Robin in order to become the new Batgirl.

When he was seven years old, Talia brought him to meet his father. Bruce, who had no idea of Damian’s existence was shocked to find out he had a son. Talia left Damian in Bruce’s care. Bruce, knowing Damian had immense training from the League of Assassins, let Damian become Robin in hopes that he can teach Damian restraint and discipline.
