Bay of Biscay

The Bay of Biscay is part of the North Atlantic Ocean and lies along the western coast of France up to the Spanish border. In English, the sea is named after Biscay, a Spanish province located on the northern coast. Other languages, however, have a different name for the sea. An example being the French ‘Golfe de Gascogne’, named after the French Province of Gascony. The sea has a surface area of 223,000 km2. It is home to some of the Atlantic Ocean’s fiercest weather, allowing for some giant waves. The bay is furthermore home to rare species of cetaceans, allowing it to be one of the most convenient places in Europe to spot whales or dolphins.
