Why can't I float?
Around the Academy:
I find it very difficult to float. Can you help me?

Larry, Woolwich

Coach replies:

Hi Larry,

Some people don't float very well - especially males.

This is due to the fat percentage and distribution on the body.

Most males tend to slowly slide under the water feet first.

This is because of the smaller amount of fat deposited on the legs and once the legs go under, everything else follows.

You will find however that you will probably only sink slightly under the water before you stop and basically float just below the water surface.

The only tips I can give you are to inhale and try to keep your lungs as full as possible all of the time increasing buoyancy and to try to relax.

Good luck Larry!

P.S. Don't panic, many Olympic standard swimmers can't float on the water surface either!
