Bearded Dragons – Cleaning and Hygiene

Once you have made the decision to buy a bearded dragon and you have a suitable habitat picked out it’s time to learn all about the cleaning and maintenance needed to keep a bearded dragon healthy and happy. This is a huge factor in the care of any pet, and you will need to learn about how regularly a bearded dragon will need to be cleaned out and which products (if any) they need  to keep their vivarium hygienic.

The basic routine for cleaning out a bearded dragon is daily, with a little care which will remove the need to completely clean the vivarium out regularly.

• Daily care should include:
• Removing any droppings
• Removing uneaten food
• Replacing drinking water
• Cleaning food and water bowls

With this daily care, your bearded dragon’s vivarium will need a full clean once every month or so. This will include removing all of the decoration and accessories, cleaning out the vivarium with a pet-safe disinfectant and replacing the substrate. If your substrate is a loose bark or calcium sand this will mean buying new, however if you use tiles or reptile carpet this can simply be cleaned and replaced. Deodorisers may also be used in the vivarium to combat smells – your pet shop will be able to advise you on pet-safe odour eliminators to use.

This simple cleaning routine will keep your pet’s habitat clean and healthy, preventing many of the most common ailments and illnesses which captive bearded dragons are susceptible to. The ease of caring for these exotic pets is what makes them so popular and suitable for adults and children alike.
