Mother and child Become An Egg Donor

Becoming an egg donor is an extraordinary gift. By donating your eggs, you can help another woman achieve her dream of experiencing the joys of parenthood, something she may only be able to do with the help of donor eggs.

In the UK, the demand for donor eggs is growing, yet there remains a shortage of donors. Your generosity can make a life-changing difference to someone who hopes to start or grow their family.

Could you be that very special egg donor?

Please read through our egg donation information booklet and check you are eligible to donate in the 'Who can be an egg donor' section below, then complete our application questionnaire for potential egg donors.

Egg sharing

Enabling someone to have a child through the gift of egg sharing is one of the most wonderful things you can do.

Egg sharing involves donating half of your total eggs collected during your IVF cycle to an anonymous recipient who is unable to produce good quality eggs of her own. This gives both you and the egg recipient the chance of having a baby.

FAQs

How to donate eggs

To start your egg donation journey, begin by reading our egg donation booklet to check your eligibility. Once you’ve done that, complete our questionnaire for potential egg donors.

Who can be an egg donor?

In order to become an egg donor at Complete Fertility, you will need to meet our donation criteria which includes:

  • Be between the ages of 18 and 35 years
  • Be a non-smoker for a least three months
  • Be fit and healthy with a BMI between 19 and 30
  • Have a measurement of ovarian reserve (an indication of egg supply) obtained through an AMH blood test with a required result within the normal range along with a healthy antral follicle count (AFC), measured at assessment scan.
  • Have no previous history of low ovarian response to ovarian stimulation for IVF
  • Have both ovaries and fallopian tubes in place
  • Have no personal history of transmissible diseases
  • Have no personal or family history of inheritable diseases
  • Have no polycystic ovarian disease
  • Have no fallopian tube disease

How do you donate eggs?

The egg donation process starts by stimulating your ovaries, usually by self-administering daily injections for around 10 to 12 days.

Regular ultrasound scans will be used to determine the stage of your ovulation cycle.

The actual egg collection can be performed under a mild sedative and normally takes between 15 and 30 minutes.

Anonymity of egg donors

The person who receives your eggs will not be told who you are, and you won’t be told who they are.

However, a law introduced in 2005 means that any child born from your donation can request certain identifying details about you once they turn 18. These details include:

  • Your full name (including any previous names)
  • Your date of birth
  • Your town or district of birth
  • Your last known address (or the address you gave when you registered)

This means a person conceived from your donation may be able to contact you in the future, although not everyone chooses to do this.

Legal, financial and social responsibilities

As a donor you have no legal, financial or social obligations to any child created from your donation either now or in 18 years time. The recipient will be responsible for any child born following the donation.

Egg recipient testimonial

Find out more about Leanne's egg recipient story.

"I was told at the age of 21 that I would never have children after experiencing an early menopause at 16 and I was absolutely devastated....It only takes one special woman to change someones life forever, and we are so grateful to the wonderful lady who made our dreams of a family come true. How can we ever thank her?"

Who needs donor eggs?

There are a number of reasons why patients need egg donation, for example:

  • They may have undergone treatment for cancer, such as surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy, which will often damage the eggs and ovaries so that no eggs are produced.
  • Some have undergone repeated IVF treatment cycles where they have not responded to stimulation or they have produced poor quality eggs, which have failed to fertilise or they have just not been able to fall pregnant.
  • They may have been born with a congenital condition, which means that they have either absent or underdeveloped ovaries.
  • Sadly some under the age of 40 go through a premature menopause.
  • Some are fertile and can produce eggs but are at risk of passing on a genetic condition to their child. Using donated eggs may be the only way that these patients can have a fit and healthy baby.
  • Some have tried and failed for many years to start a family, sometimes without a known cause of their infertility.

Compensation and Benefits for Donors

Egg donors receive a fertility check, infection screening and are compensated £985 in line with HFEA guidance.
