Beer Calories & Calorie Chart

Beer: Calories

Made from fermented grain, the calories from beer are mainly made up of carbs and alcohol. Craft, seasonal beers and beers with high alcohol content will tend to have more calories than lighter ones. If you’re keeping an eye on calorie content, opt for alcohol-free options, as these will usually contain fewer calories. Check out our Beer Chart below for more nutritional information.

How many calories should you consume?

Beer Types and Recommended Intake

Created through the process of fermented cereal grains, beer is believed to have first originated in the Middle East almost 5,000 years ago and was first commercially produced in Germany, Austria, and England in the 13th century. These days, it’s a popular drink to enjoy and a massive part of the food and beverage industry. From local breweries to recognized brands, beer has stayed consistently prominent.

Compared to wine or spirits, such as whiskey, beer tends to contain a higher number of calories. As with most foods and beverages, it is important to moderate quantity and stick to a recommended healthy limit. Dietary guidelines recommend 2 alcoholic beverages or fewer a day for men and 1 alcoholic beverage or fewer for women. This will help protect your liver and heart.

Some helpful strategies for moderating your intake include drinking a glass of water between each of your alcoholic beverages and using a pre-measured cup to keep an eye on your portion sizes. If you’d like a kick of nutrients, you can even add some fruit to your beer. Opting for non-alcoholic beers can also help to reduce your calorie intake.

Juice & Soft Drinks

Juice is high in carbs due to its sugar content and generally delivers a high calorie count per serving. Natural juices, however, can be rich in vitamins and micronutrients. Take a look at the ingredients list to determine the amount of added sugars. Soft drinks are generally considered “empty calories,” being highly processed and delivering little nutritional value. Check out our Juice and Soft Drinks Chart below for more nutritional information.Coffee

Coffee

Coffee is high in caffeine and its calorie content is highly dependent on what you add to it. Black coffee is considered a zero-calorie drink, containing no carbs, fat or protein. Adding sugars, creams and milk will change the calorie and macronutrients levels of the drink. Check out our Coffee Chart below for more nutritional information.Wine

Wine

The alcohol in wine is its primary source of calories, while the remaining calories come from the sugar of the fruit. Did you know that since alcohol contains more calories per 100 milliliters than carbs do, wines with high alcohol content usually have more calories than sweeter ones? Check out our Wine Chart below for more nutritional information.Liquor & Cocktails

Liquor & Cocktails

Liquor and cocktails tend to be higher in calories, as they are high in carbs and alcohol content, and provide the body with no nutritional value. Since cocktails often include other soft drinks, syrups and sugars, their calories can add up quickly.
