Understand[edit]

Get in[edit]

You'll almost certainly get to Berea by car. Berea is accessible from exits 76 and 77 of I-75.

When you come in, grab a travel planner pamphlet from either the Traveler's Center just off I-75 exit 77 (see below in Buy) or from the Welcome Center in town.

Get around[edit]

There are two areas that make up the major centers of Berea: Old Town Artisan Village, and College Square. Each is easily traversable on foot.

To get from one end of town to the other, you could walk; it would take about 15 minutes. Parking is easy to come by, though, so you might as well drive.

See[edit]

Do[edit]

  • Golf (Berea Golf Club), 100 Churchill Dr, Berea, KY 40403, +1 8599867141, [x].
  • Hiking.

Buy[edit]

If you want to see Berea and its artists up close and personal, go downtown and just walk the streets. Many artisans have workshops there and are open to the public (typically 9 AM-5 PM).

  • Kentucky Artisan Center (Traveler's Center), (I-75 exit 77), +1 (859) 985-5448, [x]. Spring-Fall daily 8AM-8PM; café 8:30AM-5PM. Winter (roughly Jan 4-Mar 10) 8:30AM-6:30PM; café 9AM-4PM. If you're looking for a one-stop shopping location, this is the place to go.
  • Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen, 116 North Broadway, Berea, KY 40403` (I-75, Exit 76 toward town, turn left onto North Broadway), +1 859-986-3192. 9-5 M-F. The galleries at 116 N. Broadway offer handmade works of the Kentucky Guild of Artist and Craftsmen's membership. These two galleries opened in June 2013. When in the area, stop in and see what all Berea and the artisan community have to offer. You are always welcome.

Eat[edit]

Berea recently became a moist city, in which alcohol can be served by the beverage at restaurants, and most local establishments choose to. There are some local restaurants, especially closer to the main square.

  • Native Bagel Company, 436 Chestnut St, Berea, KY 40403, +1 8597566185, [x]. Speaking of Breakfast, another great breakfast option near the center of town is Native Bagel Company, which offers more breakfast food than just bagels.
  • Noodle Nirvana, 112 S Main St, Berea, KY 40403, +1 8597563733, [x]. Noodle Nirvana features Thai and South East Asian inspired soup dishes. Thai tea goes very well with their spicier options. They offer some very good vegetarian dishes and donate a good portion of their profits to charitable causes. It's also a donut shop in the morning.
  • Yamato, 103 Brenwood St, Berea, KY 40403, +1 8592280003, [x]. It is pretty good if you want some fried rice or decent sushi for the price and just off of the highway if you're only stopping for a bite before getting back onto I-75. If you want something really nice, I'd suggest going 45-60 minutes north to Lexington, but Berea restaurants are your best option for a while if you're going south on I-75.

Drink[edit]

  • Berea Coffee & Tea Co., 124 S Main St, Berea, KY 40403, +1 8599867656, [x].

Sleep[edit]

  • Historic Boone Tavern Hotel and Restaurant, 100 S Main St North, Berea, KY 40403, +1 8003669358, [x]. The Boone Tavern is a guest house of Berea College that has been serving for over 100 years. It is one place that has not changed very much over the years. It sits adjacent to the Berea College campus, the must-stroll garden space in town. The Boone is served by a traditional dining room (reservations required), staffed mostly by students. Students at Berea do not pay tuition but must work 10 hours a week as part of their education. It is a demanding school and you can occasionally see the fatigue (like at breakfast with a single student waitress for the dining room). The place has the character of other hotels of the same Epoque (1920-1935), just on a modest scale. It is an elegant site, easy to enjoy a welcoming vibe. Service is very authentic and unaffected, even if the big chains are more efficient and might have a little less mildew in the bathrooms. It is a remarkable oasis visited quite often by Berea College's many successful alumni.
