While in real life, swords need to be lightweight and maneuverable, in fantasy, bigger can be better. Giant weapons, impossible to use practically in any realistic setting, become agile weapons of destruction in the hands of the true masters. The biggest of the big swords are the Dragon Slayer from Berserk and and the Buster Sword from Final Fantasy VII. Between Guts and Cloud, who wields the bigger, heavier, more absurd blade?

How Heavy is the Buster Sword?

Cloud's Buster Sword is  slightly taller than he is: 5'7". An estimation by YouTuber Vsauce3 placed the Buster Sword at 70.5 inches in length, with the blade itself being 54 inches in length. This same estimate placed the blade at roughly a half of an inch in thickness. Vsauce3 estimated that, assuming the Buster Sword's handle weighed a pound and blade was comprised of steel, the blade would weigh around 60 lbs. However, if the blade were made of a zinc-aluminum alloy, the blade would only weigh around 20 lbs.

Some fan recreations have weighed in at far more. The Youtube channel Man at Arms attempted to recreate the Buster Sword, ultimately crafting a blade comprised of both steel and aluminum. He felt the blade weighed between 75 to 80 lbs in weight. Even then, the blade is highly difficult to wield, being roughly twice the weight of an average large sword used in Medieval combat at minimum.

How Big is the Dragon Slayer?

Dragon Slayer is a massive blade comprised entirely of iron. It is too heavy for the average man to lift, let alone wield. Ergo, it's not going to be a light-weight blade. While people have attempted to recreate the blade, many people admit to reducing how thick the Dragon Slayer is to reduce its incredible weight. When Man at Arms designed a replica, they made it out of solid iron. They greatly narrowed the blade down, and even then struggled to craft it.

In a Reddit thread estimating the size and weight of Dragon Slayer, Redditors tried to calculate how much the blade weighed, starting with how much iron comprises the blade. Redditor ktasey09 estimated the mass of the blade. Iron weighs 0.284 lbs per cubic inch. It's estimated that Dragon Slayer is 60 inches long, 12 inches wide (save for the narrowed point), and 2 inches thick. This ultimately means the Dragon Slayer is an estimated 1440 cubic inches. When you plug in the calculation for the weight of iron, this results in Dragon Slayer weighing a colossal 408 lbs.

When accounting for the tapered edge, the blade's weight is trimmed slightly. However, Dragon Slayer is not a sharp blade, so its edges are very dull and reduce the thickness by a minimal amount. With the edges considered, estimates from other Redditors varied, but most estimated the blade was at minimum 380 lbs, making it an absurdly heavy weapon.

Even at the Buster Sword's largest estimated size and the Dragon Slayer's minimal size, the Dragon Slayer is still 4.75 times larger than the Buster Sword. While the Buster Sword is roughly 10.5 inches longer, the Dragon Slayer is thicker. It's also far less sharp. Everything about Guts's iconic weapon is absurdly and impractical. The Buster Sword, while absurd, is far more plausible.
