Best Methods for Cleaning Light Fixtures

Having the right lighting solutions in place can be a blessing. In order to keep your fixtures looking their best, you need to ensure a schedule of regular cleaning. Here are a few tips regarding mastering the best methods for cleaning light fixtures.

1. Gather the right materials

Prior to cleaning fixtures, you need to make sure you have the right tools on hand. The basic tool you will need is a microfiber towel. You never want to use a terry cloth material towel since it can scratch the surfaces of the fixture. A microfiber is also ideal for picking up dust, so you might not even need to clean with anything more than that one tool depending on the state of your fixture.

2. Check the power

You never want to clean a fixture with the power on to avoid electrical hazards. The switch should be off, the breaker should be shut to off, and the bulb itself should be completely cooled prior to cleaning. Too many times, people ignore this simple step and end up accidentally shocking themselves.

3. Consider safety matters

Aside from electrical shock concerns, make sure when you are cleaning you pay attention to other safety aspects. If you are going to be working on a fixture without removing it from the ceiling for cleaning, use a sturdy ladder instead of a chair. Consider enlisting the help of a friend to have a second set of hands.

4. Be careful with water solutions

While most fixtures can be easily cleaned with the use of a microfiber towel, you may need a little extra help if it hasn’t been cleaned in a long time. If you choose to use a cleaning solution, your best bet is to mix a mild cleaner like dish soap with warm water. It is important to note that you should never use water or cleaners near electrical components or wiring. It should only be used as needed to clean fixture heads which come off from the fixture. It is also crucial to make sure the fixture cover dries thoroughly prior to it being placed back on the fixture. Aside from the fixture head itself, never use water on bulbs. Most bulbs only require the occasional wiping down with a microfiber towel to remove any dust buildup.

5. Check hardware to avoid safety hazards

Once the fixture is clean and completely dry, you can replace it back over the lamps. Make sure you fasten any hardware to keep it in place to avoid a safety hazard. A falling lamp cover can be dangerous and lead to accidents.
