Best time to visit Belize

Hot all year round, there is no best time to visit Belize. If you want to avoid rain showers, then you have over about seven months clear between November and May, and when the rains do come, they only usually last a couple of hours. Wildlife watchers are drawn here in their droves for the fantastic fauna, so always check out what seasons bring what species.

Best time to visit Belize

It was a new moon when we took our night dive, so we were able to see the light show of the reef ostracod. The males emit substances that light like strings of pearls to attract the female. Worked for me! Belize temperatures are gorgeous all year round. For sunny and dry, November until May is great with warmth really kicking in around February. The rainy season is June to October, although rainstorms only last a couple of hours. The more tropical south can have short bursts of rain all year. Diving is superb all year round but, for migratory whale sharks, March to June is best. Call us for the best time to go to Belize

When to go to Belize, month by month guide

Belize is popular with US visitors, so public and school holidays can get very busy, as is the cruise season, February until mid-April. June is the month for LobsterFests around the country, although the founders on Caye Caulker have theirs in July. The Ruta Maya canoe race on the Old Belize River in March is an iconic event locally. The tropics become seriously tropical in April and May with humidity levels going off the scale. If you fancy a Christmas visit, it’s a perfect time climate wise, but December and January really are peak season, packed out, high prices and so on. Head south to avoid the crowds. August, September and October are the rainiest, and many businesses shut down for the latter two. But you will always find gaps in the clouds and welcoming inns. And bargains too. Hurricane season can hit the coast between June and October. There have been sixteen since 1930, and the last major one was in August 2012. September is for celebrating local style with Carnival, Independence Day and St. George’s Caye Day all falling during this month. Head south to the Garifuna towns for National Garifuna Day on November 19. Especially if drumming is your thing. Need some help? Give us a call

Responsible Travel recommends

Polly Alford, from our supplier Reef CI, marine conservation holiday specialist in Belize: “The high season and Whale shark season for Southern Belize is March through to June. However, there is no bad time to visit Belize! The Lobster festival at the end of June in Placencia is well worth a visit.” Dan Hancock, from our supplier Audley Travel, specialists in tailor made holidays to Belize: “I think February is one of the best times to visit Belize. In between the exceptionally busy periods of January and Easter, you can enjoy some of the county’s finest weather, but with more choice of hotels and lower airfares.”

Festivals & events

LobsterFest

Lobster season is lush – although it runs officially from 15 June until 15 February, local festivals celebrate at the beginning of the season. Check out LobsterFests in Placencia, Caye Caulker and San Pedro for feasts, fests, free music and a lot of frivolous fun.
