A beveled edge is made when the inside edge of the mat board window is cut to a 45 degree angle. When using matboards with a white or black core – this allows the core colour of the matboard to be visible and creates another contrasting line around the artwork edges, adding visual impact and drawing the eye into the framed image.

Beveled edges can also be reversed – to create a very thin, raised edge around the artwork. In the example below, we have framed a tribal necklace with a raised-mat design featuring ornamental cut-throughs, and a reversed-bevel edge – to produce a crisp edge around and in front of the artwork.
