These days, it is unwise to call back any unknown number, this page will explain why. As an example, everyone knows that the 900 number charges exorbitant fees if you call that code. Turns out that other numbers or codes that look like regular area codes will also do the same thing to you. Do check out the updates (2013 to 2025). They have all sorts of useful information and worthwhile government links. Is 801 a toll free number? No, it is not.![]() |

Consolidated Updates for 2013-2014-2015
- The 801 area code phone number is also being used in text message scams.
- Beware emails having the 801 number listed in their message.
- The 801 area code phone number is also being used as a fake caller ID number for phishing and outright fraud and other scams. If receiving a call from this number, simply do not answer. If you see an 801 area code in your voice mail list, do not activate the message; simply delete it. Malware can as easily be sent to a phone as to a computer.
Updates, 2016
The scams continue. In fact, they are getting worse. And not just the scams involving the 801 number. There are media reports all other phone scams are being ramped up as well. There Are Seven Legitimate 800 Number Toll-Free Codes

- 888
- 877
- 866
- 855

Updates for 2018
#1 An addition to the 2017 updates. Never call back an unknown number out of curiosity that called you and then hung up. Not just the 801 area code, but any area code. Turns out that the 900 number isn't the only premium code number where you are billed major fees for calling. There are other numbers that look like area codes that will do the same thing to you. #2 Got the well-known, phony IRS robocall claiming to be from IRS collections or whatever. Instead of hanging up, I set the phone down so as to tie up their line as long as possible. Probably caused at least three fewer people from getting called that day. Depending on my mood, I do that with most of my landline robocalls. #3 This is off topic, but still the perfect place to include it. From Census Bureau: [Quote] Census Bureau - April 5, 2018 Someone is at your door and claiming to be from the census bureau. Legit or scam? Turns out it is probably legit. Here's how to tell: - They will be wearing an identification badge. - They will be able to provide you a verification phone number. - They will not ask you for money, credit card numbers, or your social security number. [Unquote] If interested, here's a census bureau podcast about it. #4 "Is Pat there?" Yep, appears to be another scam resurrected from year 2016. Back then they used the name "Miguel". You will receive repeated calls, I've gotten 5-6 already. He always says, "Is Pat there?" Your reply should be, "Pat is at area code (xxx) xxx-xxxx." As for "(xxx) xxx-xxxx", it can be: A. Your local police non-emergency phone number. Or B. Select a number from the FBI alphabetical list of field offices near you at https://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices. Needless to say, you forget to mention where the phone number you gave actually goes. Hopefully, the hint will be taken and the calls will stop. If they are actually stupid enough to call the number without checking first; with any luck, the caller's phone number and physical location will automatically be trapped. You've certainly done nothing wrong, you were just trying to help them find "Pat". After those previously mentioned 5-6 calls, I opted for option "A". If that doesn't work, I will then do option "B". If that doesn't work, then it's just immediately hanging up as I normally do with all telephone solicitors and scammers these days. [Update. I never heard from them again after doing option A.] #5 June already. Telephone solicitor activity actually seems to be on the decline. However, telephone scammer activity seems to be on the increase; and they know your name. So if a caller knows your name, it still doesn't necessarily mean it is a legitimate call. Always ask who is calling. And if they start asking for personal information, then it is hanging-up time. #6 Telephone scammers are also using the survey technique. They will tell you they are doing a survey and then ask an innocuous question for your opinion, but then they follow up by starting to ask you questions about your personal information. #7 The usual charity scams abound this Thanksgiving/Christmas holiday season. Needless to say; never, ever donate via phone call.Updates for 2019
#1 Media reports say robocalls will increase and calls from humans will decrease. #2 Well now; hopefully, all carriers will do this: Verizon will give subscribers free access to anti-robocall tools. There is other worthwhile information there as well. #3 A very worthy, informational, and entertaining read from Wired Magazine About Robocalls. After reading it, I've gone back to not hanging up and just setting the phone down to tie up the robocaller's line as long as possible. Needless to say, don't do that if your phone service plan makes you pay for the length of incoming calls. #4 Another worthy article. There's now an FCC scam going on. And a reminder to never call back an unknown number. And a reminder about scammers and spammers using your own number to call others: NPR. #5 The FCC has initiated another, new, legitimate, toll-free 800 number. Toll-free number, 833, added to previous list.Updates for 2020
January 2020 Update Happy 2020. The federal government has passed new laws to fight robocalls. Here are two worthy articles that will tell you all about it:- Time Magazine: Law to Reduce Robocalls. What Does It Mean For Your Phone?
- CNET: Traced Act signed into law in bid to help put an end to robocalls
- Can you put a stop to annoying robocalls? Here are all the tricks we know.
- The first is a certain, infamous police association charity organization. A quick search shows that they keep over 90% of what they collect and pass along just enough so that they can't be accused of fraud. If one wants to make a donation to a legitimate police or fire fighters' charity, simply call their non-emergency number and they will tell you where/how to do that.
- The second is that well-known "cardholder" call where they claim there is a problem with your account. Needless to say, that's an immediate hang-up. If a particular call like that does trigger an intuition warning that it may be a part of something else going on, then by all means check your account and/or call your financial institution to see if anything untoward is happening.
- You can get on the Federal Trade Commission's National Do Not Call Registry by calling 888-382-1222 from the phone number you want to register.
- ATT and Verizon have spam filtering options.
- Reader's Digest recommends a spam-filtering app called Mr. Number.

AnonymousFebruary 14, 2017 at 11:04 AMMy wife had just received a phone call while she was at work on her cell phone. The caller claimed to be 'Jovan', from 801-619-6193. He claimed to be calling from a company named 'BROWZ'. Here's the catch everyone: There is a legitimate company with that name, in Utah, which is where 801 area code is located. So it is VERY EASY for scammers to 'piggy-back' an already established Company, the larger the better. He claimed to be calling about safety protection, procedures, etc, & that they work with a large Railroad on the east coast, etc. He wanted $795 to provide my wife with this protection. ( we have a small business, so it was a business scam this time, not personal ) .... he said the $795 would also be annually.Ironically, my wife & I both previously worked in a Credit / Fraud department. :( Bottom line: 1. DON'T ANSWER YOUR PHONE IF YOU GET A CALL FROM 801 AREA CODE #. 2. DO NOT GIVE OUT ANY, I MEAN ANY INFO ( EMAIL ADRS, HOME ADRS, PH #'S, EVEN IF THEY HAVE IT, AND WANT TO VERIFY IT ).3. ASK FOR AN ALTERNATE PH # IN CASE YOU GET DISCONNECTED SO YOU CAN CALL BACK, OR ASK FOR A DIFFERENT DEPARTMENT OR MANAGER. 4. YOU DON'T NEED STEPS 2 OR 3, because hopefully you would've gone with your gut feeling, and NEVER HAVE ANSWERED THE PHONE ...... SMH

I think when I opened the first text message it stole the contact info in my phone.I had to block the number but also had to send out text messages to everyone in my phone telling them if they get a random message for me about a lawsuit I don't have any legal issues and to immediately delete it so their contact info is not stolen. I also told them not to open anything or answer 801 numbers.

LizJuly 23, 2017 at 5:25 PMOur previous phones crapped out, they were old. But we have been plagued, not with scam calls so much (a few), but a barrage of 'semi-local' companies, calling to solicit home repair/remodel business. "My name is Mike, and I work with a general contractor..." etc. Ironically, hubby used to be a gen. contractor himself, so we just tell them that, and hang up. In fact, we had our own repair/remodel business for a while, and never needed to solicit business: we got plenty by word of mouth. But, I digress. We got new phones, and this set (base unit and 4 extensions, like our old one), automatically filters out junk calls, by blocking and not allowing to ring through any call not in our programmed list of friends, relatives, and current businesses we use.It will ask such an unidentified caller to state their name, and then it will announce, "call from..." and we can decide to pick up or not. Guess what? Junk callers do not give the info. Ahhhh...it is SO NICE to no longer be awakened at 7:30 or 8:00 in the morning with junk calls!

UnknownSeptember 12, 2020 at 4:52 PMDisaster! Horrible! Outrageous! My phone's been hacked, apparently, because while I was outside in a noisy area where I couldn't hear what was going with my phone and never took it out of my pocket once, it dialed (801)-773-0630. When I finally heard a recorded message, it was over 40 minutes later. I also noticed that my phone had been Wified -- I didn't have Wifi on but Wifi had been turned on. I am terrified now that I'm going to be hit with major charges, and maybe legal charges if this turns out to be some illicit porn site or something.

UnknownJanuary 14, 2021 at 11:03 AMI recieved a txt from 801 251 1771. I recieved it right after I listed my business on Google maps. His game is to hire me for a tree job on property he is selling. He is not in state (he says) and he wants an estimate. I gave him an estimate and my mailing address and told him after the check clears I'll do the job. He says ok. Then txts back a day later and says his company will allow him to only send one check and he has an electrician that will be working there and he is going to include the payment for the electrician in with my check. I was suspicious in the very beginning because he gave me an address and when I looked it up on Google maps the address showed a grassy park inside a trailer park and it was labeled as a painting company. I played along tho and went to the location to confirm. When I got there I found the property he wanted the work done on. It was only across the street. So I bid the job. Gave him an outrageous bid. 4 x more than I would normally charge. He accepted the bid without protest. He gets a tracking # for the package and tells me it has been sent. I say ok and that is the last communication I have given him so far. The check arrived yesterday and he has been constantly trying to contact me through text. The thing is he FedExd the package it took a couple weeks to get here. That's not normal. The van that dropped off the check was not labeled fedex. Then it occured to me. This guy is not in some far flung country. He is right here in this state in my town! I took note of his very good english. Most scammers have broken english. So he is American. The address he gave me was wrong because when he was scoping out a good place to claim as his, he parked his van right where I parked my truck and he googled the address as he sat there. When he got the number he didnt cross refrence to make sure it was correct. Now that he has a fish on the line he sends a check, only it was right around christmas and I assume christmas things had him busy so he couldn't deliver the check in a timely fashion. Fedex takes about 3 -4 days. He goes to the fed ex store and gets a fedex envelope to put the check in then generates a fake tracking number and label. So When he did get back to me he was very persistent trying to contact me to prime me for the delivery. When that failed he reluctantly went through with the delivery. He arrived in a sketchy white van unmarked. He moved and drove suspiciously, slowly, like he was taking in every detail looking for signs of a possible trap or sting. When he got out his head was on a swivel. I have it all on video from my security camera unfortunately it's too far away to see the licence plate. His sketchy van reminded me of a painters van.this guy works for or owns or did own a painting company, This guy is american and he is local, and he is running g multiple scams. The neighbors got a delivery from the same van. A sketchy check for absolutely no reason they said. He is still on the hook hoping I'm not wise to the game. I could catch this guy. Right now January 14 2021. I have done a considerable amount of detective work to find out what I know. I'm stuck on what to do next. I need a name and with that and all i know the cops could walk right up and arrest him. But without that they most likely will just put it on a stack of paperwork labeled "to do" because their case load right now is astronomical if I dont have a smoking gun they will not make it a priority.... if anyone can help me find that piece to this puzzle we could get one of these scammers. Time is critically important. I have a story to cover my silence that is believable. If anyone can help please send me an email. That is the only communication I will accept at this time. If you take to long to respond I may suspect that you are a scammer that read this and Is trying to steer me wrong. Time delay suggests they need to translate all of what I said. This is a shot in the dark and I'm hoping I can trust someone. [email protected]

Vicki BSeptember 16, 2021 at 1:02 AMToday I got an email with the Amazon scam. It included the number +1.(801).803.-.5179 and whe I hit reply, the email address shows as [email protected]. That of course sent me on the search to find out about the area code, which brought me to your blog. So they're reaching out by email too. My "Invoice" is obviously terrible broken English as you can see below. "We have received your order and making it ready for shipment. As you have asked for express delivery your product will be delivered by September 17, 2021. Kindly refer the charge on your bank statement for this transaction within few hours. In case you mistakenly ordered this product or wish to make changes, simply connect with our team at +1.(801).803.-.5179"Also in the past few days I've been getting tons of texts supposedly from ATT saying my bill was paid and they have something great for me. I'm not going to touch any links in those messages! My bill was paid weeks ago BTW.

AnonymousSeptember 26, 2022 at 3:47 PMHere is another number you can add to the list. 801-896-1406. It is an email in super huge text picture, claiming to be from paypal, for an amazon order for an iwatch Series 5. Of course, I do not have my paypal tied with amazon. The attachment is just a jpeg, so you can't copy/paste any of the text. The email that it was sent from, is: [email protected] have also been receiving a lot claiming to be from Geek Squad (which I never had an acct) saying it would renew, as well as McCaffee (which I refuse to even use that junk AV, as there are much better ones out there) I do not have the phone numbers they say to call for the GeekSquad or McCaffee , but the messages are almost all the same. "If you feel that this is in error, please call xxx-xxx-xxxx to get your refund." Of course, I don't fall for their scams and never call, and hope others out there keep themselves safe from these types of scams. Email scams are actually becoming worse than phone scams lately.Be safe everyone!

AnonymousFebruary 9, 2023 at 7:15 AMI got the same email to renew MacAfee and things like they will charge my credit card with $239.99 if I do not call them. Called them at 801-895-4894 and Daniel 'very professional' IT guy offer to help to cancel that and he actually guide me to install TeamViewer in my PC and give him the ID and password . I know some things about computers and if I gave him the ID and password he easily get in my PC and still my information. I did not want to give the Id and password and he start being so aggressive and verbally attack me. I realized in that moment what I was doing and hung up. Just be careful they are very convincing .

Funny thing is just paid my garbage pickup payment but not on this email. Anyways spammed it, deleted my trash too for good measure- stay wary.
