Introduction
Bill Cowher is an American former NFL player with an estimated net worth of $18 Million.
Now best known as the former head coach for the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers, Bill Cowher was regularly paid at least $2 million per year for coaching the team, earning at least $30 million over 15 years. Since his retirement from coaching, the Pro Football Hall of Famer now works as an analyst for The NFL Today, hosted by the CBS network.
Coaching Salary
Bill Cowher served as the head coach for the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers for roughly fifteen years, between 1992 and 2007. During that time, he signed numerous contracts and contract extensions, often earning him a multiple seven-figure annual salary. Based on our research, the earliest recorded salary of his tenure at Pittsburgh was 1998, when he signed a three-year extension worth $6 million, or $2 million per year. The deal excluded performance bonuses, and for the final two years of the deal, he reportedly earned a combined $4.98 million. Thus, his total earnings from the contract potentially exceeded $7 million.
In June 2001, he signed another three-year extension, this time worth $7 million. This would have increased his base pay by roughly $333,000 per year, but ESPN suggested that he would earn a total compensation closer to $3 million per year. His earnings from 2004 until 2007 were also assumed to be similar; however, the financial details for this period were never publicly disclosed.
Given all the information above, Bill Cowher likely earned an estimated $25 million between 1998 and 2007. We couldn’t find salary history for the years between 1992 and 1998; however, we can assume it was under $2 million per year. As a rough estimate, during his fifteen-year tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cowher could have earned somewhere between $30 million and $35 million in total.
Real Estate
Chatsworth estate
In 2005, Cowher purchased a 7,779-square-foot five-bedroom estate in Chatsworth, North Carolina. He paid $2.525 million for the then-newly built home. In February 2008, at the beginning of the financial crisis, Cowher listed the property for sale, asking for $2.65 million. As expected, the house proved difficult to sell. Bill reduced the price numerous times before letting the house go for just $1.9 million in May 2009.
Raleigh Country Club
In 2008, while trying to sell his Chatsworth estate, Cowher acquired a four-bedroom home situated in the North Ridge Country Club. Bill paid just over $1 million for the home and owned it for ten years before listing it for sale in 2018 for $2.4 million. The house sold for $1.845 million, $555,000 under the asking price.
