In 3018, The hobbits Frodo Baggins, Pippin Took, Merry, and Sam were sleeping at the Prancing Pony Inn and their ponies were released. Barliman Butterbur bought Bill for them for twelve silver pennies. He did the hobbits well. He sense of direction was perfect and his eye was keen. He helped lead them to Rivendell, along with Aragorn. At Rivendell, Sam claimed Bill nearly knew how to speak. They left Rivendell soon after that with a hole fellowship with a goal to destroy the evil Ring of Power. At the Gates of Moria, Bill was released into the wild. He was reluctant to because he loved Sam and did not wish to leave him. Weeping, Sam let him go and crossed his fingers that Bill would live.
