Billie Eilish Visually Explores Depression In ‘Male Fantasy’ Video

Billie Eilish has just dropped the video for “Male Fantasy”, the final track from her latest album, Happier Than Ever. 

Taking place entirely within a few rooms of a house, the self-directed video is a visual representation of what living with depression can feel like. Despondent and desolate throughout the video, Eilish lies on the kitchen floor, stares into space, eats in a dark room, and aimlessly drifts around the house, filling her day with nothingness. 

Featuring the haunting vocals and stripped-back acoustic guitar found throughout the album, the melancholic “Male Fantasy” sees Eilish reflecting on heartbreak and lost love, as well as underlying gender dynamics of pornography. “Distract myself with pornography / I hate the way she looks at me / I can’t stand the dialogue, she would never be / That satisfied, it’s a male fantasy,” she sings.

The latest single from her sophomore album, “Male Fantasy” is the first video completely self-edited by Eilish. Sharing clips on Instagram, she wrote: “one of my first videos to edit all along and it was such a fun task and very very satisfying.” “Male Fantasy” follows on from videos including “Lost Cause”, featuring the teen dream influencer house, and “Your Power”, featuring a very large anaconda.

In other Eilish news, the singer recently called for world leaders to take “urgent action” on climate change, ahead of the United Nations’ 2021 Climate Change Conference currently taking place in Glasgow. Earlier this month, Eilish joined celebrities including BLACKPINK’s Rosé, Jaden Smith, former president Barack Obama, and David Attenborough to star in climate documentary Dear Earth.

All you Eilish fans should also mark your calendars for this Saturday (December 11) when she will be taking on double duty for Saturday Night Live, making her debut as host as well as performing.
