Bethany Meilani Hamilton Dirks was born February 8th, 1990 in Lihue, Hawaii. Bethany has 2 older brothers, Noah and Timothy, and her parents are Thomas and Cherilyn. Growing up in Hawaii and having a family that could surf, Bethany learned how to surf at age 4. She was home schooled during middle school, but for high school she attended Port Richmond High School. She entered her first surfing competition when she was 8, (Rell Sun Menehune) where she won both her short and long board divisions. From then on, Bethany's love for surfing and competing only grew. She began to have the dream of surfing professionally in her future. One morning Bethany was surfing with her best friend, Alana Blanchard, and Alana's father and brother. Bethany was 13 at the time (Oct 31, 2003) and they were just doing some morning practice at Tunnels beach, Kauai. While laying on her board, arm dangling in the water, a 14-long tiger shark came and bit her left arm off just beneath the shoulder. Alana's father helped to save her life as she was rushed to the hospital. She ended up loosing 60% of her blood in the accident. Her chances of survival were slim, but her and her family trusted God and eventually overcame the situation. Not ready to give up, Bethany returned to surfing just 3 weeks after the attack. Bethany wouldn't have been able to get through it without her strong faith though. She began her relationship with God early on and also encourages others to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savoir. Bethany is such an inspiring person, to all of us. She is globally known for her strength and overcoming the loss of her arm by continuing to do what she loves, surfing. Bethany wrote about her experience in 2004 in her autobiography, Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on The Board. Soul Surfer, the film, was released in April of 2011. Bethany got married on August 18, 2103 to Adam Dirks. They recently announced that they are expecting their first child, a son, in June of 2015.
