The past few days I have been hearing a bird making sounds which mimic a cat or kitten's "Mew" sound. I know that Mockingbirds or Catbirds may do this, but as it turns out it was a Blue Jay. The Jay normally has a loud threatening voice which seems effective in getting the other birds to clear out from the feeding station. I happened to see this one sitting in a bush, cracking open a sunflower seed. Is this unusual? KC Foggin

Supporter United States Jays are very talented when it comes to mimicking sounds. When I lived in NYC, they had a few Jays that mimicked Police sirens. carjug

It's normal for a Jay to sound like a cat. I don't think they are mimicing, most Jays never hear a cat meow! Monahawk

I've heard starlings mimicing cat calls. Yet to hear one immitating a dog though. However Buzzards create a very cat like call too. This used to wind my dog up when she was a pup. She's wisened up to their calls now and takes no notice of them. Si. Warning! This thread is more than 16 years ago old.
