Black Clover: Demon From Asta's 10 Most Powerful Techniques ...

Asta's demon form in Black Clover is a sight to behold: Red-eyed, half-black hair, a horn emerging from one side of his head, two elongated canines, and a black wing sprouting from his back all combine to create the perfect demonic look. He also possesses a five-leafed grimoire, which is known to harbor an entity named Liebe. When Asta needs more power, he comes face-to-face with the devil.

Although Asta is more than capable of handling the anti-magic, he eventually challenges and defeats Liebe. However, he chooses not to enslave Liebe but forms an equal partnership with him. After all, his dream is to become the Wizard King and to protect everyone's smiles. In doing so, Asta's power undergoes an awakening that allows him to tap into the devil's abilities while also maintaining his human nature.

Updated on August 15, 2025, by Ajay Aravind: Fans waited five years for Black Clover's fifth season, and Crunchyroll has recently announced the anime's return. On the other hand, the manga has gone far beyond the anime in terms of narrative, further showcasing Asta's growth and evolution. As such, we've updated this list with some more relevant information about all of Asta's forms.

Asta Learns to Channel His Ki and Perform Zetten

Learning to read and detect another's Ki — detecting the unseen — is one of the first skills Asta learns from Captain Yami Sukehiro. As Ki exists in every living being, anyone who can sense it will have a major edge over their opponent. This sixth sense is not only a technique in itself, but the very foundation on which Asta is able to summon his other form, Black Asta.

By holding his sword in both hands, Asta uses his Ki to detect the mana flowing through him. By focusing on the mana flow, Asta can easily connect the flow throughout his body, which allows him to bring out Black Asta. One could say that Ki is both an offensive and a defensive technique. Asta later learns how to perform a technique known as Zetten. All things considered, however, this is the weakest Black Clover technique on this list.

Only Asta & Liebe Are Capable of Wielding Anti-Magic

Black Clover's Clover Kingdom would cease to exist without Asta's anti-magic. While most others believe Asta being born without magic means that he's not loved by mana, he does not see it that way. In fact, he could hardly care. All he wishes to do is to protect his friends and loved ones, which is why he wants to become the next Wizard King. Anti-magic is the ability to nullify other magic and comes from the devil inside Asta's grimoire.

Only someone like Asta can manage to handle anti-magic, as those with magic would be instantly drained from the mere effort of equipping the anti-magic swords. Interestingly, it appears that the reason for this stems from Asta's mother's magical power, which absorbs magic from everyone else in the vicinity. The only interesting outcome is the fact that Mirror Magic can replicate Anti-Magic, as evidenced by the combined techniques used by Asta.

Bull Thrust Is Basic but Extremely Effective

Bull Thrust is one of the first techniques learnt by Asta. This ability requires the Demon-Dweller and Demon Slayer Swords pointed straight ahead as Asta flies through the air, effectively negating anything related to magic as long as they're in the weapons' paths. Asta has a simpler version known as the One-Horn Bull Thrust, which is relatively weaker but can be performed with either sword.

The most impressive outcome of Bull Thrust happens when Asta and the Black Bulls face off against Fana, who uses the Spirit of Fire Salamander to greatly boost the potency of her attacks. Noelle Silva's Sea Dragons Roar successfully weakens Salamander, allowing Vanessa to catapult Asta in Fana's direction, with Finral guiding the path of movement. Bull Thrust smashes through the Spirit of Fire -- while Salamander soon regains its original shape, this technique is clearly strong enough to destroy it.

Demon-Slayer Sword: Black Divider Is a Fierce Finishing Blow

Asta's demon-slayer sword emerged first from his five-leaf grimoire, allowing him to simultaneously save Yuno and demonstrate his newfound power. Black Divider, an anti-magic sword technique, pushes and condenses magic at the edges of its blade. The sword is already huge, but somehow Asta is able to wield the blade even when it grows to several times his reach.

When not cleaving magic in two, Asta can use the flat sides of the blade to strike magic. This creates a rebound that lets the enemy get a taste of their own medicine. The Black Divider technique is typically used as a finishing blow to an enemy. More importantly, the fact that this ability is attracted to magic means that most opponents are unable to avoid the attack. At one point in the manga, Black Divider is shown to deflect a fused demon's combination attack.

Demon-Dweller Sword: Black Slash Can Knock Enemies Unconscious

The demon-dweller sword allows Asta to launch anti-magic as a black slash. Whether one big slash or multiple small slashes, the technique has enough power to knock an enemy out, but it won't cleave them in two. Another ability this sword possesses is that of connecting the wielder to its allies. In doing so, the sword can employ nearby magical attributes to create a slash.

This occurs when select Black Bull members are searching a nearby dungeon in pursuit of magical items. Asta stumbles upon a new sword and unknowingly borrows Noelle's water magic to attack their opponent, creating a blue slash. The Black Slash, however, can be cast multiple times, generating an array of attacks that can take down a whole field of weaker enemies. This technique is effectively useless against overpowered combatants, though.

Black Hurricane Effortlessly Rips Through the Opponent's Magic

After coating his body in anti-magic, Asta unleashes his Black Hurricane with the demon-slayer sword against Mimosa's older brother, Kirsch Vermillion. As the name suggests, this move acts like a hurricane as it rips through Kirsch's cherry blossom magic. Not only does it nullify the enemy's attack, but it also erases Zora's trap magic at the same time.

Asta is sick of Zora's refusal to act as a teammate, so this attack has a two-fold effect: it holds back the enemy while also forcing Zora to work with him. To Asta, there's no meaning to the royal knight selection tournament unless they act and fight as a team. Black Hurricane is a more useful ability if the battlefield is large, and Asta doesn't use it indoors for obvious reasons. That said, the speed and efficacy of Black Hurricane make it a generally potent technique.

Black Meteorite Allows Asta to Change Direction Mid-Attack

In an unfortunate turn of events, Asta is up against Finral's younger brother, Langris Vaude. In a previous battle, Langris' mana resembled that of a demonic force, such as when the Black Bulls went up against Vetto. During the official semi-final match for the royal knight selection tournament, Asta coats himself in anti-magic and unleashes a new technique. Asta's Black Meteorite strikes through Langris and slashes his team's crystal in two.

The move renders Langris unconscious, but the battle feels less than satisfactory on both sides of the field. Unlike Bull Thrust, Black Meteorite allows Asta to change direction. This is one of the very few techniques that can work with either the Demon-Dweller or the Demon-Slayer swords. That being said, Black Meteorite hardly reaches Asta's maximum potential, explaining its middle ranking on this list.

Mirrors Slash & Mirrors Meteorite Are Union Magic Spells

Union Magic spells are commonly used among the Magic Knights of Clover Kingdom, although Asta doesn't have too many combination attacks. Both his Union Magic techniques are centered around Gauche Adlai's Mirror Magic, whose Mirrors Brigade ability can spawn dozens of clones of any target. While fighting Baro, Gauche exploits Mirrors Brigade to multiply Asta, each of whom sends multiple Black Slashes at Baro, effectively defeating the Mud Monster with Mirrors Slash.

Similarly, Mirrors Meteorite also relies on Mirrors Brigade -- the only difference is that Gauche replicates Asta after he covers his body with Anti-Magic using the Demon-Slayer Sword. Mirrors Meteorite would have been extremely powerful against most characters, but using it against Dante Zogratis had no impact whatsoever. Dante merely warped space to throw all the Asta clones off-track.

Demon-Destroyer Sword: Causality Break Neutralizes Magic Spells

Asta's demon-destroyer sword is an ancient anti-magic tool that allows him to prevent his comrades and other Magic Knights from fully reincarnating as elves. This technique cuts through magic spells, making them essentially impotent. Asta, along with the Captain of the Golden Dawn William Vangeance, negates the effect of reincarnation magic and sends the elves off to a peaceful afterlife.

Causality Break is a technique that absorbs and cuts through the cause/effect relationship in a spell. The black aura emitted from the sword indicates its anti-magic abilities — the blade turns black when the aura returns. The special feature of Causality Break is that it's capable of neutralizing all magical effects, and not just magic spells that are active. Even the demons Lilith and Nahamah are affected by this technique, albeit not for very long.

Black Asta Can Fly Around and Attack on Pure Instinct

Black Asta is a unique demonic form that allows Asta to coat himself in anti-magic to use more intense anti-magic techniques. When up against seemingly unbeatable foes, Asta focuses on drawing out this other form. In doing so, he becomes evenly matched against those who wield intense amounts of mana. Black Asta can fly around with ease and release the bulk of his attacks on instinct.

Black Asta first comes into being when the Witch Queen, one of the strongest Black Clover villains, releases the cap on Asta's anti-magic. In other words, he doesn't need to think about his moves before performing them. Unfortunately, Asta cannot exploit this form more than three times a day, although twice is the acceptable limit. Interestingly, Black Asta looks different depending on his temperament; if angry, Black Asta will develop extra horns and a fiery aesthetic.
