Ask a questionWhat did Blackway & Black Caviar say about "What's Up Danger"?Genius Answer2 contributors

Blackway:

Being presented with the opportunity to be a part of this project is probably the coolest thing that has ever happened to me, and “What’s up Danger” is the product of me being able to work with creative minds like Jared Piccone and Troy Hinson of Black Caviar. The production behind the record is so intense and full of the perfect kind of energy for the film.

Black Caviar:

When the opportunity to write a song for the new Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse film came up, our 10-year-old selves were freaking out. We got connected to Blackway and on day one in the studio, he laid down the [wildest], tense, aggressive lyrics we could’ve imagined… and the song was born.

+21How did the song get its title?Genius Answer2 contributors

Like nearly every song in existence, it comes from the chorus.

It also comes from the 2018 animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The song is played towards the end of the film, kicking off its fifth and final act. In the film, the protagonist, Miles Morales/Spider-Man, is given the option to either risk his life for his friends and the Spider-Verse or he can sit back and let other people do it for him. While he makes this dangerous decision, he also dangerously decides to jump off a building as a leap of faith.

The title refers to the context in the scene of the film explained above. Up until this point, Miles is scared at the danger of being Spider-Man in his universe. At this moment, he is metaphorically facing danger and asking it “What’s up?” as if he isn’t scared of it anymore.

He likes things to be dangerous. He wants the stakes to be raised. He likes the feeling of adrenaline when something is on the line.
