Is there a way to bleach a wig? Sadly, mine's too dark for what I'm using it for, and it seriously needs to be lightened. Is there a good way to this, or am I stuck spending another fifty bucks on a new, lighter wig? -also. It has to not straighten the wig if it's wavy. Because that would be bad. x__x

You can't lighten wigs, much less bleach them. When the plastic is extruded into wig fibers, the color is already in the liquid... there's no way to remove it.

...Lovely. So basically I'm stuck with this one unless I buy another one, and spend more money.

*shrug* You can always sell the one you don't want on eBay, or see if someone wants to trade for it.

I know that you can't bleach a wig, but I have heard of people leaving wigs in the sun to lighten them, although I have never tried it myself. I have no idea if that works or not, but you could try it. Just make sure it doesn't melt. Try searching for lightening wigs on the fourms. I think I have seen threads about that before.

It might fade light, or it might just get dull and dry-looking. Unfortunately, I think you're stuck buying a new wig, especially if you need it to be significantly lighter. :\

You can darken wigs but you can't lighten them. Wigs aren't hair, so the bleaching products made for hair aren't going to work...in fact, it may actually eat away at your wig's fibers. (chemical reaction + plastic). Human hair is mostly protein, and these bleaching products are made to work with those proteins to lighten a person's hair color. Even darkening a wig can be tricky for the same reasons, because the shade of the plastic fibers determine how it's going to turn out once you color it with markers and such. (or whatever method you prefer). Blue sharpies on a blonde wig will look different than blue sharpies on a auburn one. And just like bleaching products, traditional human hair dye has no effect. Someone mentioned the sitting-in-the-sun method may or may not work for you. Keep in mind that if you try it, depending on the temperature of the sunlight you could risk a slight melting of the wig fiber, causing them to all stick together and essentually ruining the wig. (of course that may not happen at all. Many factors determine this kind of thing). So, sadly, you'll have to buy another lighter wig. Sorry about your luck. =(

You CAN straighten a wig. Pour hot water on it in a bath tub or set a straightener on the lowest setting and LIGHTLY pull downward. DO NOT CLAMP hard it will leave cinks and burn it. Be careful when using a straightener. Use the water. Works the best.

Hello, pointless necro. Looks like I'd better sleep where the zombies can't get me tonight....

What if you want it to be white? I got a silver/white wig and its sadly much more grey the actually silver. And it would be nice if i can make it white?

    A. this is an old thread and B. The answer is the same 6 years latter. Synthetic wigs are noting like animal hair the is not way to lighten them other then painting them which ruins hte texture/finish of the wig.

I know a way to do it, but it isn't permanent and you will have to redo it if you wash your wig. Take a white posca marker (the kind people write on windows with) and basically color your wig.

  • Mangochutney

How many times is this thread going to be re-animated from its chill grave? (using a white posca marker is painting the wig, for the record, and has the same problems of changing the hair's texture, sheen, and also of limited coverage.)
