How to Grow & Harvest Blueberries

When to Plant

Blueberry seeds are slow germinators, the first seeds will probably start to germinate in about a month, and finish germinating over the next 2-3 months. Blueberries should be started in a separate container from other varieties that germinate quickly because they can take longer to sprout up.

How to PlantPlant your blueberry seeds inside moinstened sphagnum peat moss in seed trays and cover them with about ¼ inch of soil. Keep seedlings moist and allow them to grow in the moss until they reach 2 to 3 inches tall. Be patient! Blueberry seeds may take 6 - 8 weeks to germinate, even up to three months. Chilling your blueberry seeds prior to planting will enhance their germination rate and help ensure a successful outcome. Keep your starter trays between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit with a germination mat if daytime temperatures are below 60 F. Once your seedlings reach about 2 inches, you can thin them out and transplant into a sunny or lightly shaded location with moist, acidic soil the following autumn.

When to Harvest

Wait until your berries are a deep-blue color and fall off easily with no tugging or pulling.
