As with every plug-in hybrid, getting the most out of the X3 xDrive30e depends on keeping the battery charged. It also means the car's hybrid system can assist the petrol engine and maximise fuel economy. If you generally make short trips – a brief commute or school run – you can use electric power exclusively and avoid burning fuel in your daily motoring.
BMW X3 hybrid range, MPG & CO2 emissions
All versions of plug-in X3 have a claimed electric range of 30 miles from a fully charged battery; real-world distance will depend on your driving style. However, the smaller battery pack in the X3 means it trails the near-50 miles range of the Lexus NX 450h+ and Volvo XC60 Recharge. However, none in this class can get close to the 80 miles of the revised Mercedes GLC 300 e.
Charge time
There are no official charging time figures, but the X3 xDrive30e should charge in around two-and-a-half to three hours using a home wallbox; 3.7kW is the fastest charging speed for the X3, and it doesn’t have the rapid-charging capability of a Land Rover Discovery Sport. Charging from a three-pin domestic socket is an option, but it will take longer. BMW also supplies a cable for public charging with the X3 and a charging card. The latter allows access to public networks partnered with the brand, reducing the necessity for multiple subscriptions.

- 1VerdictThe BMW X3 xDrive30e continues BMW's trend of offering impressive plug-in hybrid versions of some of its most popular models
- 2Range, MPG, CO2 & charging - currently readingDecent electric range, strong fuel economy and low CO2 make a compelling case for the X3 plug-in hybrid
- 3Running costs & insuranceAs ever with plug-in hybrids, the BMW X3 makes the most sense for company-car owners, but runs its diesel counterpart close
- 4Performance, engine & driveThe plug-in X3 is good to drive and has plenty of power, but the petrol engine can feel thrashy
- 5Interior, dashboard & comfortThe plug-in hybrid BMW X3 is just as comfortable and sensibly laid-out inside as other versions
- 6Boot space, seating & practicalityYou lose some storage space to the X3 hybrid's batteries, but this is still a practical family SUV
- 7Reliability & safety ratingSome patchy ownership survey results for BMW are countered by strong safety options for the X3 plug-in
