CHICAGO, April 4 -- Bo knows when the end has come. Bo Jackson, the former two-sport athlete who spawned the 'Bo knows' catch phrase from shoe advertising, has chosen retirement over a post- strike return to the California Angels. 'It's official,' Susann McKee, Jackson's business manager said Tuesday. 'He has officially retired from baseball as of yesterday (Monday). 'He has been pursuing his acting career since the start of the strike. He also has other business interests he's pursuing and obligations to his family.' Jackson's retirement was first reported in Tuesday's editions of USA Today. 'Enough is enough, I'm retiring,' he told the newspaper. 'It was great while it lasted, but it's over now. As of April 3rd, I'm retired from pro sports.' McKee said Jackson is involved with new projects for HealthSouth, a Birmingham-based rehabilitation and fitness conglomerate, and recently played a guest role in the television series 'Diagnosis Murder.' Jackson, mainly a designated hitter with the Angels last season, retired from football after suffering a hip injury during a 1991 playoff game with the Los Angeles Raiders. The former Heisman Trophy-winning running back from Auburn began his baseball career with the Kansas City Royals, underwent hip replacement surgery after his football injury and returned to baseball with the Chicago White Sox. Jackson told USA Today that he received calls 'from five or six clubs,' but changed his outlook during the baseball strike. 'I got to know my family,' he said. 'That looks better to me than any $10 million contract.'
Jackson enjoyed his best baseball season in 1989 with Kansas City, when he reached career highs in homers (32), RBI (105), hits (132) and runs (86). Also in 1989, Jackson had his best NFL season with the Raiders, rushing for 950 yards with four touchdowns in 11 games. He spent four years with the Raiders from 1987-91. Jackson, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1985, spent the first five years of his baseball career with the Royals before being released on March 19, 1991. He was signed by the White Sox less than two weeks later. Jackson missed the entire 1992 season after undergoing reconstructive hip surgery April 5. He returned to the White Sox in 1993 and hit .232 with 16 homers and 45 RBI in 85 games. He signed with California as a free agent on Jan. 31, 1994, and batted .279 with 13 homers and 43 RBI. Jackson, who homered in four consecutive at-bats in 1990, has hit 141 homers and driven in 415 runs in 694 major-league games.
