Although he was born in Miami, Florida, Bobby Shmurda was still a baby when his father was sentenced to life in prison, and his mother raised Bobby in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in a poverty-stricken and crime-stricken environment, Shmurda found himself in hot water with the law at a young age. He was arrested multiple times during his youth on gun and drug charges.

As a teenager, Bobby enjoyed remixing songs by some of his favorite music artists and would freestyle rap over beats by 50 Cent, Jay-Z, and Lil Wayne. He continued to pursue music, uploading videos to social media platforms, many of which went viral.

Legal Issues

In 2014, Bobby Shmurda was on a roll with his hit single “Hot Boy,” which topped the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and reached No. 6 on the Hot 100. The track was certified platinum within 50 days and helped popularize the viral “Shmoney Dance,” earning Shmurda widespread fame.

However, his success was cut short when he, Rowdy Rebel, and 13 members of his GS9 collective were arrested on December 17, 2014, following a year-long investigation. After his arrest, he was charged with reckless endangerment, drug trafficking, gun possession, and conspiracy to commit murder. Despite efforts to secure bail, Shmurda remained in jail.

In September 2016, Shmurda accepted a plea deal for seven years in prison to avoid a potentially longer sentence, citing the decision as a way to reduce Rowdy Rebel’s time behind bars.

However, on February 23, 2021, after just over six years in prison, Shmurda was released in Kings County, New York, and placed under close supervision. He is currently subject to supervised release until February 23, 2026.
