The Boston Marathon returns to its historic time slot on Patriots Day, the third Monday of April for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic struck.

The race was postponed in April 2020 as the pandemic first spread and people shied away from public events in favor of social distancing. Runners were invited to participate virtually. Last year in 2021, the race was postponed to the fall as COVID cases surged once again last spring.

Runners will take off for the 26.2-mile trek this Marathon Monday from the starting line in Hopkinton over the course of several hours depending on their skill and ability levels.

The Boston Marathon will take place on Monday, April 18. The men’s wheelchair start will kick things off at 9:02 a.m., followed three minutes later by the women’s wheelchair event.

The starting gun for this year’s Boston Marathon shoots off just after 9 a.m. on Monday, April 18.

The men’s wheelchair race will kick things off at 9:02 a.m., followed three minutes later by the women’s wheelchair event.

At 9:30 a.m., the handcycles and duos group will depart.

Runners in the professional men’s division are the next group up, taking off at 9:37 a.m. Next comes the professional women’s division, who take off from the finish line at 9:45 a.m.

The last race to take off is the the para-athletics division, which starts at 9:50 a.m. Wave 1 will leave the start at 10 a.m. Wave 2 will kick off at 10:25 a.m., followed by wave 3 at 10:50 a.m. and wave 4 at 11:15 a.m.

The race finishes up in Boston’s Copley Square.

About 30,000 people are expected to come to the region on Marathon Monday — either to race or spectate, Boston authorities said.
