Bridgerton 2: A Parents Guide - The Cactus Chronicles

Dear readers. Lady Whistledown is back. That because Bridgerton 2 is now available stream on Netflix. Based on a popular series of Regency novels written by Julia Quinn, the series follows the trials and tribulations of the Bridgerton family. But is Bridgerton 2 as steamy as the first season? And is it appropriate for tweens and teens? I’m answering those questions and more in my spoiler free parent movie review. With a TV-MA rating that includes sexual content (including nudity), some profanity, and drug/substance use, here’s what parents need to know about Bridgerton 2 on Netflix.

Bridgerton 2 on Netflix- A Parents Guide

The first season of Bridgerton was released on Netflix on December 25, 2020 and it was quite the success. The second season starts where the first season left off. Anthony, a Viscount and the oldest Bridgerton sibling, has decided that it’s time to fulfill his familial duty and marry. His choice? Lady Edwina, a young woman who is in London with her family to try to find a match (aka husband). Except that there’s one person standing in Anthony’s way, Kate (Lady Edwina’s older sister). What’s a Viscount to do? Why, try to win over Kate, of course.

Because this is a Netflix series that is based on romance novels, here’s what parents need to know about the Bridgerton 2 age rating.

What is Bridgerton 2 Rated?

Bridgerton 2 is rated MA which means that it’s for mature audiences only. A TV-MA rating is usually reserved for TV shows which are suitable for adults and generally not suited for those under 17 years of age. That’s because it can contain crude language, graphic violence, and sexual content. Here, the series contains sexual content, language, and drug/substance use. More about that below.

Language

There’s not a lot of profanity in Bridgerton 2. A total of 8 episodes, I only caught one curse word: arse.

Drug/Substance Use

Some of the characters do get high, for a lack of a better term. For example, one character drinks something which causes him to act in a very euphoric state. Another character sniffs a powder-like substance, which is supposed to be tobacco (aka snuff).

Sexual Content

There is a lot of graphic sexual content in Season 1. That’s primarily the reason why I wrote in my parents guide for Season 1 that this series is not appropriate for kids. Does season 2 follow in its footsteps? Overall, it’s not as graphic, although there is sexual content like nudity. Private body parts, like breasts and butts, are shown, and some of the characters are shown having sex. There is another scene which implies that one of the characters is touching themselves. The steamiest sex scene occurs in episode 7, but there are other scenes in the other episodes that show characters cavorting with each, implying sex. As a result, this is primarily why season 2 is rated TV-MA.

Overall Thoughts

As a parent, as always, use your discretion. The MA rating is an accurate one, mostly due to the sexual content. While the sexual content in the second season isn’t as steamy or as graphic as the sexual content depicted in the first season, it is something that you’ll want to be aware of.

As for the series itself, some fans will appreciate that season two is a watered-down version of season one, while others will possibly be disappointed. As for me, I thought season 2 could be boring at times but I quickly binged all 8 episodes, so there’s that.

About Bridgerton 2

From Shondaland and Creator Chris Van Dusen, the second season of Bridgerton follows Lord Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey), the eldest Bridgerton sibling and Viscount, as he sets out to find a suitable wife. Driven by his duty to uphold the family name, Anthony’s search for a debutante who meets his impossible standards seems ill-fated until Kate (Simone Ashley) and her younger sister Edwina (Charithra Chandran) Sharma arrive from India. When Anthony begins to court Edwina, Kate discovers the true nature of his intentions — a true love match is not high on his priority list — and decides to do everything in her power to stop the union. But in doing so, Kate and Anthony’s verbal sparring matches only bring them closer together, complicating matters on both sides. Across Grosvenor Square, the Featheringtons must welcome the newest heir to their estate while Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) continues to navigate the town whilst keeping her deepest secret from the people closest to her.
