British Pound

The British pound traded at $1.34, marking a 7.5% gain against the US dollar in 2025, its largest annual rise since a 9.5% jump in 2017. Sterling benefited from diverging expectations over rate cuts by the Bank of England and the Federal Reserve in 2026, as well as a largely uneventful Autumn budget, which eased pressure on the currency in the second half of the year. The Bank of England cut borrowing costs four times in 2025, though policymakers remained split and signaled that the already gradual pace of cuts could slow further. In the US, investors priced in additional easing in 2026 amid signs of a cooling labor market. Domestic political concerns and stagnant growth in the UK tempered the pound’s gains. Against the euro, however, sterling fell more than 5% to 87.2 pence, its largest annual drop versus the single currency since 2020.

The GBP/USD exchange rate fell to 1.3458 on January 2, 2026, down 0.01% from the previous session. Over the past month, the British Pound has strengthened 0.79%, and is up by 8.33% over the last 12 months. Historically, the British Pound reached an all time high of 2.86 in December of 1957. British Pound - data, forecasts, historical chart - was last updated on January 3 of 2026.

News Stream Pound Climbs 7.5% vs Dollar in 2025 The British pound traded at $1.34, marking a 7.5% gain against the US dollar in 2025, its largest annual rise since a 9.5% jump in 2017. Against the euro, however, sterling fell more than 5% to 87.2 pence, its largest annual drop versus the single currency since 2020. 2025-12-31 Sterling Breaks $1.35 Level The British pound strengthened past $1.35, its highest in three months, benefiting from a weaker US dollar as markets anticipate at least two Federal Reserve rate cuts next year, reducing the dollar’s yield advantage. The Bank of England cut rates by 25 basis points to 3.75% in December, in a narrow 5-4 vote reflecting ongoing inflation concerns. Although inflation eased to 3.2% in November, it remains well above the Bank’s 2% target. Governor Andrew Bailey said rates are likely to trend lower, but not as quickly as markets might hope. UK GDP grew 0.1% in the third quarter, in line with expectations, though the BoE forecasts flat growth in the final quarter. Even so, traders expect at least one further rate cut in the first half of next year. Sterling has gained over 2% this month and roughly 8% year-to-date, positioning it for its strongest annual performance against the dollar since 2017. 2025-12-23 Sterling Rises to 11-Week High The British pound strengthened to around $1.345, its highest in 11 weeks, benefiting from a weaker US dollar, as markets expect the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates at least twice next year, reducing the dollar’s yield advantage. The Bank of England delivered a widely expected 25-basis-point rate cut to 3.75% in December, with a narrow 5-4 vote underscoring persistent concerns about inflation. Sterling has risen over 1% this month and about 7% year-to-date. 2025-12-22 Related UK Manufacturing PMI Revised Lower FTSE 100 Tops 10,000 Level UK House Price Growth Hits 20-Month Low Pound Climbs 7.5% vs Dollar in 2025 UK 10-Year Gilt Yield Falls to Over 3-Week Low UK GDP Annual Growth Rate Unrevised at 1.3% UK Business Investment Defies Initial Estimates UK Q3 GDP Growth Confirmed at 0.1% UK Q3 Current Account Gap Smallest in Nearly 3 Years UK Retail Sales Fall to 6-Month Low: CBI Latest Canadian Stocks Start Year Higher US Stocks Start Year Mostly Higher Week Ahead - Jan 5th Canada Factory Activity Declines for 11th Month Mexico Factory Activity Contracts Sharply in December DAX Starts 2026 on Higher Note European Stocks Extend Record Highs Italian Stocks Start 2026 Strong Uganda Inflation Rate Steady at 1-Year Low Colombia Manufacturing PMI Remains in Expansion
